I connect my phone to my computer and I see "XT1032" show up under Devices and Drives. When I open that device, I see a folder for "Internal Storage". I open that folder, where I used to see many folders, I see only "DCIM" and "Pictures". "DCIM" folder contains a few pictures from my camera and "Pictures" folder contains the one picture I use on my phone desktop.

I don't recall what other folders used to be there or when/how they disappeared but I used to go into Documents and see copies of all the word files I have created in the phone. 3/22/19 was the last time I was able to copy the documents folder from my phone to my computer. Everything, including those word documents work when I access them from the phone.

Does anyone have any suggestions to what has happened?
Any suggestions as to how I can diagnose this?

Interesting enough, the problem disappeared and the phone has worked as expected ever since. At the moment, I do not see any option to mark this as solved.

I just changed over to the Moto e6.

When you had your phone connected to the PC via USB cable, there should be a pop-up window, Use USB for, on the phone. There you must have selected 'Photo transfer(PTP)' other than 'File transfers'.

Yes, this is probably the solution. I believe I have seen that option.
How do I get it to show? Will it be on the phone or on the computer?

Everytime you connect your phone to computer with the USB cable, an option window will be shown on the phone.

Lately it has not shown. I have seen it before but not today.
Maybe I switched if off somewhere/somehow...
