When navigating using Google Maps in Android Auto, I often times need to know the direction I'm heading (eg heading east or heading west). Is there a way to put a compass icon on the map?

Google maps is always oriented so that North is up. Anyway if you do a search for compass overlay for google maps you will find what you are looking for

In Android Auto's community forum, What I found for you is:
"The compass arrow is not continually shown on the map, but if you tap on the map you should see compass and zoom in/out controls." Answer given by Peter R.

Tried and it works. What you really have to do is double tap on the target icon and the compass appears

You can get a compass only on those devices that come with a magnetometer. Open Google Maps. Double-tap the location button in the bottom left corner of the screen.
