Google Assistant may be making its Nexus debut with the 5X and 6P

Google Assistant, which is a bit like a conversational Google Now, was announced at last year's Google I/O. While so far it has only been available for Pixel smartphones, the latest rumor is that it will be coming to Nexus devices soon. The two lucky Nexus devices that will be the first to receive the assistant are the 5X and the 6P.

I would definitely fit into the AndroidPIT team!

Google Assistant is Google's own intelligent assistant, which differs from Google Now in that it doesn't require direct, specific commands. It can understand conversational speaking style, so you can make requests naturally. If you've never seen it before, check out the video below.

The addition of Google Assistant to the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P is due to come with the next "major" update, according to a source familiar with the topic, which you can see in the Tweet below. Perhaps this means we'll have to wait beyond the next Nougat maintenance update (7.1.2), or even until the release of Android O.

In addition to the 5X and 6P, Google Assistant will be coming to the Nexus Player as well. The director of Android TV, Sascha Prüter has confirmed it, but we still don't know exactly when Google Assistant will come to each device.

Are you excited about Google Assistant? Or are you unimpressed? Let us know in the comments.

  • Like other Nexus users I felt let down by by the omissions in N for us. I too purchased my 6p because of the stated promise of having the latest from Google before other phones. It was a bit of a slap in the face when Pixel was touted as the platform for Assistant. Makes me wonder if Google go for another name change, will the same happen. As I'm coming up to my next planned upgrade I am considering this as a factor in choosing my next phone. It is likely to be one that doesn't ditch loyal customers.

  • Already have it installed on my 5X since 7.0 came out... Using the Velvet and Buildprop zips. Voice to text works well as long as you're not in a noisy environment.

  • I suppose the pixel phones ar better. I had a Nexus 5 and now a Nexus 5x and I just love my phone. Everything is smooth, great camera, super fast and fast charge. Digital print, everything. Just needed the Google assistant and these are major and great news. Bravo Google 👏👏👏

  • It would be about time. I bought my 6p when it came out with the ideal I would be getting the latest and greatest software Google had to offer for the next major upgrade like all the nexus (I had a nexus 4 ) before had. I spent more money on a phone than I ever had before. I'm not sad I did. I love my 6p. But my opinion of Google drop some when N came out and they screwed loyal nexus users by giving us a watered down N. I understand not having features that are hardware dependent. But they were showing off Assistant on a 6p just weeks before we heard of the Pixel name change. Then it was almost like Google decided the 6p never existed.

I have both, Google assistant on a pixel xl, and Google now on a Moto x pure (2015). I'm sure Assistant will improve dramatically over time, but at the moment, Google now still seems more cohesive and capable.

I have had the Nexus 5x for about 3/4 of a year and I really liked it overall. I speak in all of my texts and and learning to use the assistant more and work it into my daily routine.

  • I have a OnePlus 3T and I've had Google assistant for 2 months.

  • This could be true, especially since they are removing the Google Now Launcher from the Play Store.

I would be excited if Google Assistant replaced the Google Now Launcher - which is available for all Android Devices vs keeping it Pixel / Nexus exclusive 👎

    • I own a Nexus 5x and am very happy with the news, if Google choose to keep it pixel/Nexus exclusive that's because they want to sell phones. It's up to you to decide, if the assistant is important buy a pixe,l if not don't simples.
