Android Nougat linked to Google Pixel battery problems

About a week ago, we reported about the Nexus 6P and the extremely frustrating battery problem it has been having. Now the same problem, that the device simply powers down with anywhere between 10 and 60 percent battery left, has been noticed by many users owning a Google Pixel. This isn't its first problem either; recently owners reported Pixel audio issues.

I could have written this article much better!

From what we have been seeing on Reddit, in addition to our own comments related to the Nexus 6P battery issues, it is easy to see that this problem is no laughing matter, affecting thousands of Nexus smartphone owners. The sad thing is that now, Google's very own premium Android smartphone (that comes with a high price tag no less), is also experiencing a similar problem. Reddit commentators have said that the Pixel is shutting down near the 30 percent mark. At least with the Nexus 6P, you have Huawei, the phone's manufacturer, looking into the problem, but there is no news yet of what Google is doing with its latest smartphone. With the 6P, Huawei reported that it was a software issue, not one relating to hardware, though the problem still persisted when owners downgraded to Marshmallow.

The Pixel was the first phone to come out of the box with Android 7.0 Nougat. Let's hope that this is just a problem affecting a few phones, one that can fixed with software down the road. If Google wants to stay in the race when Samsung's Galaxy S8 hits the Android world in March 2017, the Mountain View company had best ensure that its phones are in top running order.

Have you encountered this issue with your Google Pixel? How has your Google smartphone been running since you got it? Let us know in the comments below?

  • This has been happening to me pretty much since I got the Pixel, I should have stuck with Samsung. Mine turns off anywhere from 10%-25%. It's always a guessing game when it will turn off. Literally 5 or 10 seconds after turning my phone on battery saver mode today it turned off at 12%. Google really needs to at least let everyone know they are doing something or going to do something about the issue. I am greatly disappointed with the product so far. The pixel has just been a watered down version of Samsung but with more problems and better commercials, flaunting something they can't deliver on.

  • My Pixel started shutting off at around 10-15% battery a few weeks ago. Maddening.

  • I have the Google Pixel XL and ive been having this battery issue since the most recent update (not exactly sure which one). At first, it turned off at 24% and its done that for a while. Then i read that factory resets seemed to fix the issue so ive done that yesterday, losing quite a bit of data and photos (not all of it synced for some reason, and it wasnt much space either), and it worked fine the first day but today it just died at 14%. Not sure if this is normal but the Android OS and Android System are 2nd and 3rd on the list of Battery Usage at about 30% and below with my screen at 51% (on full brightness)

  • I am having the same problem on my Pixel XL and it's annoying. The worst part is when you call Google technical support they won't confirm that there's a problem. I have the feeling the battery drain issue is confined to the larger Pixel XL phones. My brother's Pixel (smaller phone) works fine. Hoping Google will come up with a fix.

  • I have the same problem, sudden shutdown at %20? Level. Ugh.

Got my PIXEL XL early November everything was cool then all of a sudden it just started doing this about 2weeks ago at 1st it started shutting down at 15 percent now its happening at 30-40 percent this is pissing me off i havnt even paid for this thing isn't even close to being paid for yet.

  • I sought out this article to see if other Pixel owners were having the same problem. I got this phone on December 24th and have been bragging about it to all of my friends. Then, last week something strange happened. I went to check the time but my phone had powered off. It was around 3 in the afternoon and it had not been a busy day for my phone so I knew there should have been plenty of battery life left. (I also have it on the power saving mode when it drops to 10% battery but no notification was ever made). This has happened twice more this past week, with my Pixel unexpectedly shutting down at 9% and 14%. It's concerning to me and I'm unsure what my next step in finding a solution should be. Please help!

My Pixel has been doing this for some time. Once it even turned off from 75% battery.
I can no longer depend on this phone since it will turn off at anytime. Once I was waiting for an important business phone call and it shut down and I missed the call.

I have contacted google support but they just told me to check some setting which did not make any difference.

If anyone has had this problem resolved please comment.

  • My Pixel has been doing to me a few times now, shutting down unexpectedly. It's frustrating and I plan to take the one to my dealer to get it fixed or replaced, but they'll have to send it away for repair and I'll be without a phone for a few weeks.

  • My brand new pixel just did this to me last night, causing my alarm to not go off and subsequently making me late for work. When I plugged my phone in and went to check the battery history it shows it dropping from around 30% to zero in a deadfall. Thankfully I took a screenshot because when I checked back on the phone an hour later the battery history was "unavailable."
I'll be going to Telus tomorrow to trade it in for a new one.

  • My phone has been shutting down with anywhere from 40% to 50% battery left. I was told to do factory reset and that did not solve the problem. I am getting a new phone and hopefully that will not be a lemon.

  • I have the same problem for last week. My phone just shut down after 40 percents left. Earlier I used to charge it after 2 or even 3 days of using

  • This is exactly what my Pixel is doing!!!! Anywhere from 10-30 percent left so far, it'll just shut down. When I go to turn it back on, it says the battery is at 0. When I plug it in to charge it, it also says the battery is at 0.

  • I'm having bad battery drain since upgrading to 7.1.1. my phone used to last 3 days on a charge. It now barely lasts an entire day. I just factory reset the device and setup as a new device. Battery was fine for 1 day, now drain occurring again. Ex. As I type, battery is at 75% and of charger for 7 hours. I have the screen set to dim. I've only used it for about 10-15 minutes total while off the charger. I'm disappointed.

  • My problem just started after upgrading to 7.1.1. my battery was 31%, the phone just shut down & I couldn't turn it back on because it says the battery is 0% (yes, it shows a battery with red 0%)

One additional note: I was using a generic USB charger, I've now gone back to Google's pixel charger hoping it'll fix the problem.

  • I have no battery problems with my Pixel XL. The battery often last more than 2 full days with regular usage. Screen brightness 60℅ and light mode always on.

The common theme here is Google. Google needs to investigate the issue and fix it.
