How to make your Android smartphone's battery last longer

Smartphone batteries don't last forever, and some devices have an almost-embarrassing screen-on time. Those big, luscious AMOLED and LCD screens and taxing apps are an obvious drain on your battery, but there are lots of things you can do behind-the-scenes to make your Android last longer. Let's explore how to increase battery on your smartphone.

How Android batteries work

First, some background: most smartphones have either a lithium-ion battery or a lithium-polymer battery. Both are actually lithium-ion though, and as such, do not have a 'memory', which means you can charge them from any level – you don't have to fully discharge them before charging them up – and you don't have to charge them all the way to 100 percent.

In fact, these types of batteries suffer from low voltage problems, so it's actually better to partially charge them (say, from 20 percent to 90 percent) than to fully charge and fully drain them. Battery care is always open for debate though, so for every accepted tip there will be someone that says it makes no difference. Just find the ones that work for you and you can increase battery on your Android device.

To our chagrin, most devices released nowadays don't have removable batteries. This looks like it won't change anytime soon. And despite most of them being close to 3,000 mAh they still need to be optimized, especially for demanding new games. Take advantage of some of the tips below and really get the most out of your smartphone.

Black wallpaper can increase battery

If your phone has an AMOLED screen (like most Samsung devices), use a dark-colored background. Black wallpaper can increase battery life because AMOLED screens only illuminate the colored pixels. Black pixels are unlit, so the more black pixels you have, or the more darker pixels, the less power is needed to light them up.

To download a completely black wallpaper, tap the link here.

  • Now, save the picture and go into your Settings.
  • From there tap Wallpaper hit Choose wallpaper and scroll down to Gallery.
  • You should be able to find the black wallpaper you just saved.
  • Hit set to wallpaper and lock screen.

Watch the video below to see how this is done:

Doze Mode

Doze mode has been around since Android Marshmallow, but has been improved with newer Android versions. Before, Doze would only work when the smartphone has been stationary for a while. But now, it can also work when it's being moved around (in your bag or pocket while you're on the go, for example). The screen just needs to be off to work.

Doze mode essentially just shuts down things you're not using depending on how long it has been since you've touched your phone. Network connection is severed and syncing only happens during specific intervals. When you're away from your phone even longer, more things are stopped, like GPS, Wi-Fi scanning and all syncing.

Turn off Google Assistant

Stop your phone from always listening. Google Assistant is a fantastic and often very functional feature. The problem is that it can wreak havoc with your battery. Especially if you don't actually use it or only use it occasionally.

Go into Google>Search from your Settings menu and tap Google Assistant>Settings heading. On the next page, select your device and toggle off Google Assistant for longer battery life.

Don't let your apps fall behind the times

Keep your apps updated. There's a reason developers constantly update apps, and most of the time it's for memory or battery optimization. Keeping your apps updated also means you have the best optimizations available. Likewise, delete old apps you no longer use, because these may be running background processes that chew up RAM and battery life.

Once you've ensured your apps are up-to-date you can go through them individually and check if they're optimized for battery life. This can be done quite quickly. Just go into your Settings and tap Battery. From there hit the menu button (three dots at the top right of your screen) and go to Battery optimization. From there you can see which apps are optimized and change them. You can only change the non-essential system apps. Watch the video below to see how this is done.

Use the 'Lite' or 'Go' versions of apps

To save battery life, not to mention mobile data, you can take advantage of 'Lite' versions of popular apps, or even Google's new suite of 'Go' lightweight apps. These are stripped down to their essential features and designed to be simpler and more economical than their full counterparts. Facebook and Messenger both have Lite apps available in the Play Store.

Skype also has a Lite app in the Play Store, but it may be unstable as it is technically unreleased. Social networks such as Twitter and Instagram, also have Lite versions available to download.

Use Greenify

Unlike many Android apps that claim to optimize performance and increase battery life, Greenify actually works. Greenify allows you to put other apps into hibernation when they aren't in use, preventing them from operating in the background.

This frees up system resources and boosts battery performance, but requires a bit of thought. For Greenify to be effective you can't just hibernate every installed app. But since there are a lot of Android apps that perform actions you don't know about, or necessarily want, this is a useful tool.

This can be helpful in many situations. For example, you might use the Amazon app to browse for things to buy, but don't want it to operate in the background or send notifications. There might be other apps on your Android device operating in the background without a good reason. Greenify stops this by sending those apps into hibernation, which reduces their impact on the system, saving battery life while improving performance.

Don't use adaptive/auto brightness

Don't use display auto-brightness. It may sound useful, but auto-brightness is usually way brighter than you really need. It's better to manually set the brightness to a level that is low but comfortable, and bump it up when necessary. This is one of the best ways to improve your battery life, because the screen is one of the biggest battery suckers.

To ensure your adaptive/auto brightness is off go into the Settings>Display in many devices and toggle the adaptive brightness.

Turn off vibrate and haptic feedback to save battery

Switch off vibrate. Unless you really need that added awareness, turn off vibration alerts for incoming calls. It actually takes more power to vibrate your phone than it does to ring it. Turn off haptic feedback too (that buzz you get from typing on the keyboard). Sure it feels cool, but it doesn't really add anything to your experience, and it's another battery drainer. Watch the video below to see how you can do this.

Set your 'Do Not Disturb' or 'sleep' schedule

Set sleep times or blocking mode to switch off Wi-Fi and mobile data when you don't need them. If your phone is basically off limits at work, set your device to not ring, vibrate or connect to the internet while you're at work. Many phones have a Do Not Disturb setting for just this purpose.

Likewise, you can set your phone to airplane mode when you're asleep or use sleep or blocking modes to set up limits for what your phone does during certain times of the day, whether that's while you're asleep, at work or in a meeting. Cool apps such as IFTTT let you create rules that can help you save battery life too.

You don't need to be connected 24/7

Turn off GPS, Bluetooth, NFC, Wi-Fi and mobile data whenever you don't need them. Turning off location data, or changing your location settings to use Wi-Fi or 4G data rather than GPS works perfectly well. This will increase battery on your Android device.

Only turn on Bluetooth and NFC as long as you need them (even though they consume very little power), and there's no need to have both Wi-Fi and mobile data turned on at all times, especially if you know exactly when you'll need one or the other.

If you use Wi-Fi a lot though, say at home and at work, then it makes sense to keep set your Wi-Fi to 'Always on during sleep' as this uses less power than to have your Wi-Fi reconnecting every time you wake your phone. Most of these can be found in your Settings.

Don't get bogged down by widgets

Ditch widgets you don't need, especially those connected to the internet, such as weather widgets. If you have multiple widgets across several home screens, which are constantly syncing and updating (Twitter, reddit, weather, Gmail and the like), you're not doing your battery any favors. Just hit the apps when you need them.

If you already have a bunch of useless widgets on your device then you just need to do a couple of things and they'll be gone. Long press on a blank space on your home screen. Now drag the widget you don't need into the trash bin at the top or bottom of your screen (it depends on the brand).

Explore the battery saving features on your phone

All ROMs, whether stock Android, OEM UIs such as TouchWiz, or custom ROMs like LineageOS, have various settings in the menu to help conserve or optimize battery consumption. Most, manufacturers, including Samsung and Huawei, feature a Power Saver mode you can just toggle on.Find these various options for your device and ROM and make them work for you.

Even if your phone doesn't have layers of battery saving features like some (or you simply don't want disable so many features), at least make use of the basic battery saver mode.

Don't fall into the auto-sync trap

Turn off auto-syncing for Google accounts. If you don't need every single Google account updated every 15 minutes, just go into Settings and Accounts (or Cloud and Accounts, User and Accounts, etc. depending on your brand)and turn off auto-sync for those apps you don't need constantly updated.

Some apps – like email – let you manually refresh when you launch them, rather than running multiple auto-refreshes throughout the day when you may not need them to. The same goes for Twitter, Reddit and co. Unless you need constant updates or push notifications (like for Facebook or your calendar) just sync when you actually use the app.

For a black background you can turn off the light switch and take a pic without flash right... Then you don't have to worry if the page is hacked bugged or has any viruses either. (Those that are insanely security/privacy obsessed. Make your own black background.

Obviously, every application that runs in the background consumes memory and that's why it's good to keep only the really important applications. I used battery economists for a while, but I noticed that their effect is not what I expected, so I quit any optimizer. Personally, the WiFi connection keeps on working all the time. Together with the minimum of applications I need, the battery holds me for 2 days, which I am pleased with.

Having your own pvt wifi and password encoding is best. I have all scanning or "allow my device to be shown" turned off. My network is supplied by a wireless giant. They alone know about it. No 1 else needs access. I don't use bluetooth. If others want wifi or anything they can buy their own service or upgrade to "Unlimited Data" plans. Mid power saving is useful if customized. Max disables apps and is work environment only.

To make your phone battery last you treat it the same as any other type of battery, thats never run it down to low, never fast charge as seems to be the practice now? Try keeping your battery above 50% try not to leave on charge when fully charged, slow regular charging that doesn't heat the battery is the key to a longer battery life with these days of non removable batteries.

I'd just research all of the newest phones with all of the current features or ask a store employee with any major wireless provider. Att Samsung Verizon.... Tell them what you need and let them set it up for you. If you have the Financial might buy a few phones/plans and test them for yourself. Maybe upload a YouTube vid detailing everything... A little self education augmented by what everyone else says can help you make the best choices. Or test for yourself ignore other's advice and post success/cautionary warnings. Just use Sense. If you can't create a controlled explosion and aren't aware of the consequences beforehand then just let other's knowledge guide you. Don't explore the wilds if it means being eaten by a Tiger...

Overwhelmingly the drain is the screen - just check settings:battery to see what's been using it. My cure is a low brightness setting indoors, a fierce 30 second time-out, and a reliable app-specific screen-on app to override that: I use Keepscreen. I also have No Screen Off to just plain stay on, when needed. After some surprising trouble with ridiculous "tablet idle" on Android M (following an update soon after activation) I used Recovery Mode to wipe the system cache, and that reduced it a lot. Greenify is very useful.

I've also activated Developer Options (google it) on all my devices, to disable all three animation settings and limit background processes - I can get away with two - saves battery and makes screen changes snappier.

I think it depends on mindset and personal preference: Phone controls how brightly you see... Or perchance YOU like controlling your device... I strongly suspect only You can truly answer this topic... Auto removes your control. While it's intended to compensate (bright sunshine or intense indoor light= Dimmer or near black stargazing= Brighter (that's how I would create the rules for auto) it should be up to You. Look at Gremlins: "BRIGHT LIGHT BRIGHT LIGHT BRIGHT LIGHT" (1980s movie) Isn't very helpful if it hurts your eyes. Yet you shouldn't squint in near dark to read a text message/file an office memo using cell data because your office building just burnt out it's circuits. How about a middle lane choice? If you have a developed brain and "common" sense... I'd use my own personal judgement (and I do) It's My phone. I'm not on loan so it can have legs to carry it to it's next destination...

Prior Marshmallow, I was using Lollipop and Doze (the app), and could keep my battery percentage at full charge when screen off after a full recharge.
But with marshmallow, I encounter a huge fall of the charge when sleeping (1%/min), even without doze, greenify, du battery saver, du speed booster or clean master, with native smart manager and doze service only.

But I noticed, the battery level is constant when turning to Airplane.
Not a good idea , as I may receive messages or phone calls, but It is a solution to keep the battery from draining too fast.

Also, enable developer mode on your device (Google how to do that), open developer mode in settings, then scroll down to window animation scale, turn it off. Also turn off transition animation scale and animator duration scale. Less animation and transition effects, more battery.

Auto Brightness on my S4 is very dull not extra bright so I don't use it.
As for updating apps I tend to not update them too often because devs often make changes (ES File Explorer I'm thinking of you) that I don't like or the app doesn't function right (I read the reviews in the play store before updating).
I've started looking for alternative apps that are easy on the battery. Tinfoil for Facebook and Twidere are very battery friendly. I was always getting wakelocks with the Facebook app (and Messenger). Twidere has a night mode and as far as I know Twitter doesn't.
I've also started deleting apps and using a browser. The latest app to be axed was Weather Underground because of the permissions. I don't see why a weather app needs to read my files and photos.

No Play Store auto update. I just have notifications when they're ready. I update when I want. Phone maintenance/cache clearing is pretty useful 1/1-2 wks if you download un-install re-install apps or other media. Apparently a lot of excess trash files help facilitate downloads then just clog memory afterwards. 1/wk or a month check for Op Sys updates. All or most of these should be under settings of 1 or another labeling...

I noticed that when I move certain apps to the SD card, I get a warning that the app won't get a 'boot complete' notification. I was a programmer many years ago, and reasoned that this notification MAY allow the app to start at boot, and by moving it to the SD card, the app may not start when I restarted the phone.

I moved Amazon Store app to SD card. Previously when I restarted my phone, I immediately ran Greenify. Greenify ALWAYS stopped Amazon Store - showing it always started at boot. After moving Amazon Store app to SD card, lo & behold, it was missing from apps stopped by Greenify - suggesting that it hadn't started.

My question is - would I be wrong in believing that moving a pile of apps to SD card that need the 'boot completed' notification to start at restart/reboot will stop them starting at all, and as a result improve battery life. I only use a lot of these apps occasionally, so why start them every time?

java is about 5-10 times more memory hungry and the vm process model is less performant and kills batteries big time. there is absolutely nothing google can do about it (nor they even wanted to, they would not care if your battery lasts like 25% of a regular iphone!). the business model is also wrong, what you get for free is anything but lunch! all these spamers and advertisers kills you battery. segregation and lack of upgrades from the vendor are also clear sign that android days are actually numbered, no matter how much we would not like this to happen. samsung is also famous for signing commercial deals with different bimbos (facebook, at&t, etc) - these deals are not only invading your privacy but also kill your battery and guess what you cannot get read of them, unless you root your phone (disabling them was taken care of by individual vendors by re-enabling them at restart time). this commercial garbage is no different that the defunct world of windows desktops and laptops... google is not a software company, they purchased android, they are advertising that's what they do... just think about it...

I never had a problem with battery lasting a day with heavy use on my iPhone 4. My Galaxy S6 needs to be plugged in nonstop or it'll die mid day with average usage. My wife has the Iphone 6, with comparable use (checking FB, email, some short time gaming) her battery will be near 50% by the time we leave work; whereas mine... well I don't know because I always have to keep it plugged in so it doesn't die. The 5.1.1 update (finally ATT sent it over) did help a lot but man... A phone where I constantly have to tinker with it to get it to not die in 5 hours, I might switch back to iPhone just so I can count on a phone battery to not drain because it's simply turned on.

I have Samsungs Note 2 and Note 4 phones. The newer Note 4 is primarily work related only hence always used with care to preserve battery. For the Note 2, i purchased a 10,000mah battery which can last me 2 days on heavy use (incl games) and on basic use possibly 3-4 days. Its a true life saver

Downside, large battery means say goodbye to the phones slick and slim look but for me personally its a worthy sacrifice

So basically your saying "you have a great smartphone with lots of features - so turn all those off - use only the basics"

My battery usage is quite good, combined with wireless charging (which stops the phone from using power rather than properly charging it).

If you like the added features, which I do then the offset is charging more often.

Kevin, its rather simple, I like a few of the features which are constantly turned off and only made active when required. Most of my family members complain about the battery life but after checking their phones its evident they leave most features on. My dads phone has his Wifi on literally 24 hours a day and only recently he's started turning certain features off when not in use, esp. wifi, mobile data, Bluetooth, location, etc and now seeing a significant difference. In the end, its a smartphone and with a smart user, we can get the best out of it.

For the better part, I too wonder when the tech world will develop a battery which can last us days or weeks.....until that happens stay smart, stay Android :P

Can someone elaborate about the screen timeout? Is it better to have a higher timeout time because it uses more battery every time the screen turns on? I was a little confused by that section. Thanks.

    • 2
Daryl Jul 11, 2015 Link to comment

      Hi Gary,

In terms of preserving battery life, it's best to set the screen timeout to the shortest time possible (e.g. 10 or 15 seconds). The longer the timeout, the more battery your phone will consume.

For simplicity, if we assume that a user switches on their phone 150 times a day, a 10 second timeout will consume 25 minutes worth of battery, whereas a 60 second timeout will consume 2 hours and 30 minutes of battery. It must be noted that the section assumes that a user would always let the screen timeout, rather than manually switching it off once they have finished using the phone.

Also, Restrict Background Data (in the Data Usage overflow menu) - I only just started using this recently and while it makes a minimal impact on my syncing, it makes a huge impact on my battery life. Plus, when you have it on it sits in your notifications drop down, so you can quickly switch it off whenever you need to.

Hey @Cano, the tips above are pretty standard, it's just the path you need to take that's different on each smartphone. Samsung's have battery saving made which is good, plus all the other general ones. I just wrote another article recently about texting optimization too, and the Light Manager app can also save your battery because you can customize LED notifications, meaning you don't need to turn your phone on all the time just to see what a vibration/alert was for.

Battery enhancement has become a bit of an obsession of mine now. I used to just leave everything turned on all the time, even the features I never used. Now I turn everything off and only switch it on when and if I need it. Sure, it adds an extra 10 seconds to a process every now and then, but I quite often go days or weeks without needing to switch on a infrequently used feature, meaning it's not sucking battery life all that time in the background, "just in case" I use it.
