The Huawei P9 was launched last week in London and, as is the custom, it must now face its foes. Engaged in gladiatorial combat today, we find the Huawei P9 and LG G5. The pair compete to see which will sleep safe in the hands of consumers and which will find less favor, with the fishes. The Huawei P9 or LG G5? The die is cast.
Huawei P9 vs LG G5: design
In the design section, we find two devices that have evolved very differently from their predecessors. In the case of Huawei P9, we see that the design has not changed much. The biggest change is the addition of 2.5D glass to the front panel, while the rear has a cycloptic band at the top where both the dual camera, flash and autofocus laser reside. A little further down we find, for the first time in the P series, a fingerprint scanner. The design is generally more rounded while maintaining the elegance displayed by its predecessor.
LG, meanwhile, has taken the design of the LG G4 and changed everything. The first change is in the choice of material, from leather or plastic to aluminum, giving it a premium look. The curved back of the G4 has been leveled and the trademark trio of buttons on the rear, dating back to the LG G2, has also vanished. The rear panel now incorporates a dual camera and, to not have to sacrifice the removable battery, the bottom of the device can be detached. A fingerprint scanner, fortunately, does remain, positioned as usual below the camera unit.
Huawei P9 vs LG G5: display
The Huawei P9 retains the same 5.2-inch screen with Full HD resolution, already seen on the Huawei P8, with 423 ppi. The standard version, which is what we tested, sticks to IPS-NEO LCD technology, and it performed well in our early tests.
With the LG G5, the screen has come down from the 5.5 inches seen on the LG G4 to a more modest 5.3 inches. Maintaining the same QHD resolution means that the ppi has increased to 554. The LG display is of a quality beyond doubt.
Neither device will disappointed, but we can compare them more carefully once we have both in the offices.
Huawei P9 vs LG G5: performance
The Huawei P9 incorporates one of the most powerful processors available, the Kirin 955, which promises much better performance than the 950. In the standard version of the P9 we find 3 GB of RAM and a 32 GB of internal storage that can be expanded via a microSD card.
Inside the LG G5, we find the latest Qualcomm chip, the Snapdragon 820, a quad-core processor whose numbers promises a great results. This processor is accompanied by 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, expandable, as on the P9, via microSD. The Kirin 955 vs Snapdragon 820 is a duel that promises much bloodshed, and we look forward to the fight.
Huawei P9 vs LG G5: camera
In this section, both devices share one thing in common: they both have a dual camera. But each implements the technology in its own way. The Huawei P9 features two 12 MP sensors, each with an f / 2.2 aperture. These Leica sensors promise superb results.
As it did with the Nexus 6P, Huawei has incorporated laser autofocus, something LG has had on the past three generations of its flagship device. If the P9 is able to meet expectations here, it will be a competitor in the increasingly tight battle for the best Android smartphone camera.
The LG G5 employs its dual camera in a different way: there’s one 16 MP sensor with a 78-degree field of vision and an 8 MP sensor with a lens offering 135-degree vision.. As usual with LG, there’s laser autofocus, enabling it to take faster photos. We can be sure that the LG G5, like the P9, will sit among the best cameras available on Android smartphones.
Huawei P9 vs LG G5: battery
Huawei, despite having made a very thin smartphone, manages to increase the battery size to 3,000 mAh, 320 mAh more than its predecessor. If we add this increase to the smaller screen size, it is more than likely that the device will reach the end of the day off a single charge, but if you need to charge it during the day, you have the peace of mind afforded by fast charging, which offers 5 hours of talk time off a 10-minute charge.
Less fortunately, the LG G5 has witnessed a decline in battery: down from the 3,000 mAh of the G4 to 2,800 mAh. Despite the device’s metal design, however, the G5’s battery is removable, thanks to what is unfortunately being described as the ‘magic slot’. This feature also allows for the attachment of proprietary devices, one of them (the camera) includes an extra 1,100-mAh battery, making for a total of 3,900 mAh, a decent figure. Of course, we can also count on quick charge in times of need.

Huawei P9 vs LG G5: conclusion
The P9 and G5 represent two devices that have evolved along very different paths. Huawei has opted for small improvements that retain a strong sense of brand identity. LG is more cantankerous and liable to make drastic changes: plastic to aluminum, the removal of the rear button trio. The Huawei P9 has the price advantage, at $650 in its cheapest form, while the G5 is innovative for its design, detachable base and magic slot.
