The LG G4 is a classic phablet. The leather version is unique and the performance is solid. So how does it match up against the newer and less expensive UMi Plus? Take a look in our LG G4 vs UMi Plus comparison.
LG G4 vs UMi Plus: design
We compared the leather version of the LG G4 with the UMi Plus. There are significant design differences between these two devices that could sway your decision. They are completely differently shaped but the UMi Plus is smaller.
The dimensions for the UMi Plus are 155 x 75 x 8.8 mm, which makes a 102.3 (mL) total volume for the phablet. The LG G4 dimensions are 148.9 x 76.7 x 9.8 mm and that means a total of 111.9 (mL) for the LG G4. This isn’t just apparent on paper. When you set the devices down you can clearly see that the UMi Plus is smaller. And although it’s a bit taller, it’s a easier to use with just one hand.
The home buttons are in different places on these devices. The LG G4’s is on the back. This makes it easier to hit if you’re holding it in your hand. But if you have the phone on a surface then the UMi Plus is better. The home button for the UMi Plus is both capacitive and physical and you can choose to tap it how you want. It also has a fingerprint scanner, which is not offered with the LG G4.
The preference for the look and feel of the two devices is a matter of taste but there is no question that the UMi Plus looks and feels like a premium device. The glass front flows seamlessly to the metal sides and the back.
LG G4 vs UMi Plus: display
These phablets both have quality screens and should leave you satisfied. The LG G4 comes with a 5.5-inch 1440 x 2560 LCD display with pixel density of 538. That's quite impressive and indicative of LG devices in general. The UMi Plus comes with a 5.5-inch 1920 x 1080 (401 ppi) Full-HD screen.
Both of these phablets have rich colors and the screens are quite bright. The LG G4 is a bit crisper because of the extra ppi; you have to look pretty close to see this though.
LG G4 vs UMi Plus: audio
The dual speakers on the UMi Plus are at the bottom of the device. This makes the audio experience on the UMi Plus superior to the LG G4. You can listen to music or watch movies while the phone is upright or lying down. In our tests, we found the UMi speakers to be better.
LG G4 vs UMi Plus: camera
The LG G4 comes with a 16 MP rear camera and an f/1.8 aperture with optical image stabilization 2.0. It outperforms the UMi Plus – with its 13 MP main camera – for outdoor and indoor photos under all lighting conditions, but not by a lot. The colors of the LG G4 camera are richer and the snapshots less grainy. Have a look at the photos below and see what you think.
The UMi Plus comes with a 5 MP front camera while the LG G4 comes with an 8 MP snapper. This makes for better shots with the selfie camera. Both have HDR capabilities. The beauty features on the LG G4 make for clearer selfies than on the UMi Plus.
LG G4 vs UMi Plus: performance
There isn’t much daylight between the LG G4 and UMi Plus in terms of performance. The AnTuTu benchmarks were nearly identical and normal day-to-day functions were adequate for both devices. There are small differences between these devices though.
The download speed for the UMi Plus is much faster than the LG G4. On average, the UMi Plus downloaded apps around 25 percent faster than the LG G4. This really makes a difference when you think about how many pictures, videos and apps you download over the course of a month.
Speaking of downloading, both of these devices come equipped with 32 GB internal storage and both are expandable up to 256 GB. It would be a challenge to fill up that much memory.
The LG G4 comes with a hexa-core Snapdragon 808 chipset backed with 3 GB RAM. The UMi Plus comes with a Helio P10 octa-core processor and 4 GB of RAM. You can see the benchmarks for these devices below, both benchmarked quite similarly. There is only a difference of 2000 points between the two, which is minimal. Remember, the OnePlus 3 benchmarked around 90,000 higher than both these devices.
LG G4 vs UMi Plus: software
The LG G4 can be upgraded to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The UMi Plus comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow but UMi told us that it will get the OTA update for Android 7.0 Nougat on December 24. The ROM is already available to be flashed.
LG G4 vs UMi Plus: battery
The battery of the LG G4 was one of the biggest disappointments we had when we originally tested the device. The 3000 mAh battery clearly underperforms the 4000 mAh unit in the UMi Plus. In our initial tests, the LG G4 only managed to get 18 hours of normal use but the UMi Plus got us almost 29 hours.
This is even more impressive when you consider the extra 1 GB of RAM on the UMi Plus. And charging for the UMi Plus is much faster with the USB Type-C cable and adapter. Even with Quick Charge technology and a smaller battery, the LG G4 charged more slowly.
The one advantage that the LG G4 has in terms of battery is that it has a removable battery and the UMi Plus does not. So if the G4’s battery starts to lag you can always grab a fresh one for about $20.
