The OnePlus X has just been unveiled at an event that AndroidPIT attended in London. Ahead of our hands-on review, which will be arriving shortly, we’re taking a look at how the 5-inch OnePlus X compares with a similarly small handset, the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact. Here is our OnePlus X vs Xperia Z5 Compact comparison.
OnePlus X vs Xperia Z5 Compact: Design
The OnePlus X might be a low-cost handset, but it looks great. It's a black device with a glass rear and metal, chamfered edges, the sort of features that are more commonly found on more premium devices. A limited edition Ceramic version of the OnePlus X is also available, but it costs a little more.
The plastic design of the Xperia Z5 Compact looks cheap by comparison, despite it being more expensive. The Z5 Compact is the smaller of the two phones: 127 x 65 x 8.9 mm compared with the 140 x 69 x 6.9 mm OnePlus X.
The Xperia Z5 Compact is water-resistant and houses a physical camera button on the side for taking photos or launching the camera app, while the OnePlus X features the 'alert slider' also found on the OnePlus 2.
OnePlus X vs Xperia Z5 Compact: Display
The Sony Xperia Z5 Compact houses a 4.6-inch high-definition (1,280 x 7,20 pixels) display while OnePlus X has a 5-inch Full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) resolution screen. With the higher number of pixels, the OnePlus X should be your first choice if you want to watch movies or games at high resolutions.
OnePlus X vs Xperia Z5 Compact: Camera
The OnePlus X comes with a 13 MP rear camera with auto-focus and 8 MP front-facing camera. The Xperia Z5 has a 23 MP Sony sensor with phase detection autofocusa and LED flash, and a 5.1 front camera.
On paper, the Z5 Compact has the stronger camera. Sony produces its own camera sensors, which are used in many other smartphones, and the latest version, found on the Z5 Compact, is extremely capable.
OnePlus X vs Xperia Z5 Compact: Software and performance
The OnePlus X has a Snapdragon 801 processor, while the Xperia Z5 Compact is powered by a Snapdragon 810. The 801 arrived early in 2014 (that's a long time ago in smartphone terms), but the OnePlus X does house 3 GB of RAM compared with the Z5 Compact’s 2 GB. Still, the Xperia Z5 Compact is likely to have the fastest processing and smoothest performance.
The OnePlus X comes with 16 GB of internal storage and the Z5 Compact has 32 GB, but both offer expandable storage via microSD cards. Both currently run Android Lollipop.
OnePlus X vs Xperia Z5 Compact: Battery
The Xperia Z5 Compact battery has the slightly bigger capacity than the OnePlus X, coming in at 2,700 mAh compared to 2,525 mAh. Sony’s Xperia devices have reputation for strong battery performance, and giving that it has the larger cell, and the OnePlus X has to power a Full HD display, we think the Z5 Compact battery performance will be better. We'll find out for sure once we complete our full OnePlus X review.
OnePlus X vs Xperia Z5 Compact: Price and conclusion
The OnePlus X Onyx will be on sale in the UK from November 5, for price of £199 and will be available in the US two weeks later, on November 19, for US$249. There's also a Ceramic version of the OnePlus X, on sale from November 24 for £269. Only 10,000 will be made. You will need an invite to purchase either model. The Sony Xperia Z5 Compact starts at £449 (approximately US$683), and anyone who wants one can buy one.
The Z5 Compact is likely to be the superior device in battery life, camera tech and performance, but the trade-off is that it's far more expensive than the OnePlus X. The Z5 Compact just can’t compete with the OnePlus X on the display though, so if you want a bigger Full-HD experience for less than half the price, the OnePlus X is phone for you.
