Samsung finally rectifies the Android 4.3 bungle for Galaxy S4 and S3

Samsung finally rectifies the Android 4.3 bungle for Galaxy S4 and S3

After weeks of frustrating waiting and fuming whilst getting the silent treatment, owners of international variants of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S3 in the US, the UK, Germany and France are finally getting some stability back in their lives. A ''stable'' version of Android 4.3 has reportedly been released that patches the laundry list of problems experienced over the last couple of weeks by Samsung owners.

The International Business Times is reporting that Galaxy S4 owners on the AT&T network in the US will be receiving the stability patch update OTA as of now, after a delay of a few weeks when the previous update was pulled. S4 owners in the UK will also finally be seeing a solution to their long-suffering problems, with an update that reputedly fixes the well-publicized stability issues on the international variants of the S4 and S3. Germany and France are also receiving the S4 update.

Galaxy S3 owners in the UK, Germany and France will also receive a patch but it is not entirely clear just yet if it is already rolling out or if it will be coming this week - we'll keep you updated as more information comes to light. If you've seen the new update on your Samsung in any of the countries affected, let us know if it has resolved any previous issues you experienced. Samsung UK is promoting the IBT article on their Facebook page, which has served as a bit of a hub for this fiasco since it began a few weeks ago, so it would seem the story has the official stamp of approval. Hopefully things will now settle down, both for the affected users and Samsung's customer service.

Have you seen the update yet? Is your Samsung working normally now?

  • I'just downloaded the new upgrade on my S3 which is only a few days old but i've put it on hold for an hour so i can find out should i install or not ? I'm worried cos of all the bad reports about the upgrade.

    • Hey @Jimmy, the issue is always there: stick with the firmware you currently have or update and face the possible bugs. My advice is always to wait and see how it goes for your device/carrier and then see how you feel.

      • Hiya Kris, Thanks for the tip i found a couple of people local who had updated their S3,s without problems so i took the plunge and up to now it,s been great (touch wood) thanks all the same.

  • If your definition of "rectified" means making it slightly less horrible... then, yes, it has been rectified. My update just came in yesterday. I have the S3 through Sprint and I'm in the states. Let me tell you what I've gone through since updating:

    1. Decreased battery life is dramatic.
    2. WiFi is spotty at best, even sitting right next to the router.
    3. Laggy keyboard.
    4. Gallery crashes on share every single time. Gallery also lacks choices of different layouts.
    5. Apps crash at least 80% more often.

And a personal pet peeve: the lock screen is about 30% smaller and the extra space is used up by a clock that you can adjust the size of, but makes no difference in the size of the lock screen.

Not pleased. Went from a perfectly functioning phone to one that renders most of what I do on my phone impossible or difficult.

  • Unfortunately there's not much news about the update schedule for various countries. Half the time you don't even know when it's going to happen until it actually starts to happen. Sorry I can't be more specific guys. But for international variants of the S3 the stability patch can't be far away now, it just depends on when your local carrier pushes it out.

  • They have NOT YET rectified enough. I`m looking at LG and ASUS as options as Samsung is too slow and acting very "high horse" (Samsung South Africa does not even reply to calls or emails) so let them go down with a bang. I personally will badmouth them all the way and is telling all my friends and acquaintances that Samsung is already following BB and it`s a loser so rather go for LG or ASUS.

  • Im from kuwait,. Im using samsung S4 when will

thanks krish for answer. .. so it seems not worth to have 4.3 yet until it stablize...

  • 5th Dec 2013 living in Ireland I received OTA update patch for unbranded galaxy s3 (25mb only). Still cannot send items from within Gallery. Otherwise the lag when waking up phone seems to have been solved. Music stutter when screen is off seems to be solved too. Needs more time to tell for sure.

Kris, a couple of questions. If they are idiotic, apologies. I have a UK unbranded S3 and stayed on 4.1.2 after reading the reviews of the disasterous upgrade to 4.3. With the repair identified in the story, have the laundry list of items been fixed. Some of the comments above seem to indicate not, but not sure if this is referring to the new patch or not. Still seems that the items are not fixed. As well I understand this is a Kies only upgrade. But do you use Kies 3 to patch, if you are on 4.3 already and still use Kies 2 to upgrade from 4.1.2 to 4.3? I would upgrade and do a factory reset, but it is not clear what the actual situation is. Anything AndroidPit can do to shed light on this would be appreciated.

    • Hey @Chris, as I just mentioned above, the stability patch is now rolling out OTA in the UK and Ireland, with other countries in Europe to follow shortly. Early reports seem to indicate that the vast majority is problems have been fixed, and there's some VERY happy reports on battery life improvement and RAM management on XDA. So I'd hold off on doing anything until the stability patch feedback is in and it's available to you. Keep an eye on Samsung Mobile UK's Facebook page - that's the best place for feedback right now. Once everything seems to be consistently good (some Gallery sharing crashes being reported right now) you can go ahead with the OTA or Kies update to 4.3.

  • I'm in the UK with an unbranded S3 awaiting the fix, keep hearing of news that's its been realised but its not happening for me, i'm itching to rewind it back to 4.1.2 but worried I might end up with a paper weight and voiding my warranty :/ been over 3 weeks for me now, bad show for Samsung and this will be the last Samsung product I will buy, the device itself is nice but the support when things go tits up is terrible, I've suggested to Samsung to include a rollback feature in future Kies software in an event something like this happens again because at least they would have had a fall back, I then got some rubbish 'copy and paste' reply they I told them Asda offered more rollbacks than them then they deleted my post :/ in all honestly I can't see an end insight and leaving 1,000s of users with defective smartphones for the length of time they have is quite frankly unacceptable. :(

    • Hey @Jason, the international variant is getting the stability patch pushed OTA as of a couple hours ago in the UK and Ireland. So far it doesn't seem to be available on Kies but it'll be coming soon. I just wrote an article detailing the changes first adopters are noticing.

  • have the upgrade.... battery does drain faster. also I have five phantom downloads that are no longer on my phone but won't stop telling me that the download is complete. slight delay in waking up the screen. not really happy with the new upgrade. I like the option to delay but instead of a reminder after 3 hours it just installed automatically. I did not like that.

  • It's cool

  • when samsung galaxy s3 will get 4.3 update in lebanon ?

  • AT&T has it in the us for s4

can you please tell me when will 4.3 update come to samsung galaxy s3 in india??

  • It's 10:45 CT in the US and I just got off the phone with Samsung Android support. I was told that they are still working with the carriers (I am a T-Mobile customer) to resolve issues with 4.3. The rep said the Wi-Fi issues are the most pressing problem. I was advised to check back in two weeks to get an update. Anyone have better info?

    • I updated my mom's ATT Galaxy S3 to 4.3 last night. Now Wi-Fi will no longer work (major concern). "Mobile data" toggle is also missing like what most people are experiencing. Not happy.
      California here.

Update 12/06/13: Did a hard reset (factory data reset) and that solved the Wi-Fi issue. Phone is running smooth. No other problem observed.

  • Hi Kris, any news on when this 4.3 fix is going to arrive in Ireland? A lot of VERY UPSET S3 handset owners have already jumped ship to ios and windows, it's been that bad!

    • Hi @Robert, I've heard no date for Ireland yet, but I'll update you when I hear more.

*Edit: the international variant stability patch is being rolled out today in the UK and Ireland. let me know when you get it and if everything is sorted out!

I have done the update & HATE it. My battery drains I have to charge it 3 times a day now. My contacts come & go & when they are there I click on it and it freezes and I have to shut the phone off. It lags when I click to go to the home screen. Sprints solution is to do a factory reset......so I try to back up to Kies and that freezes. All in all if I can take it off I will. I hope they have a fix soon because to reset my phone will suck! Very unhappy :'(

  • I'm in Toronto and I got the update! I've have an S3 and with Wind mobile carrier. Update changed the settings portion to be the same as an S4. S voice have changed. The long press button so you can close the app by swiping it changed its background image. Contacts that does not have an image has somewhat a smiley picture. There are some noticeable changes in the samsung apps, calculator, and more. I have installed an app that changed my home launcher like ADW so I don't know what changed in the original.

  • I just updated last night on my Galaxy S3 and am already having a couple problems. Gallery crashes everytime I try to "share." Screen transition freezing more times than not. Battery drains faster. (That is with disabling/turning off all unwanted/unnecessary applications in the manager and forcing all my tasks closed after each use) I'm pretty happy with every thing else and love the new look. Just wished my gallery was accessible and simple tasks didn't make me want to chuck the dang thing across the room :P

Hi admin@ when s3 gets android 4.3 update in india. International gt-19300. Here no carrier branded devices.

    • Hey @ashif, I haven't heard anything about the update in India yet. We'll keep you posted when we find out.

*Edit: the international variant stability patch is being rolled out today in the UK and Ireland, so it shouldn't be long until it spreads throughout Europe and into India. If I hear a specific date (unlikely) I'll let you know.

me also from india, they are not updating device and all other countries have got the updates,u can simply mail at samsung india website to CEO office, they may say something regarding the exact date, i have called before seven days they says it will come soon but not yet came

  • Do not download it if at all possible. It cuts the battery time in half

    • Woah! Really @Russell? Did you get it already? Where and on what carrier? Have you tried a factory reset following the update just to see if that makes a difference?

  • I'm in the US also and i downloaded 4.3 on my AT&T S4 and it has not worked correctly since then,i don't know how to downgrade to 4.2.2 but i wished i could,my phone might as well be a brick....Someone please lead me in the right path as to who to contact,AT&T or Samsung,or how to downgrade to 4.2.2 again."PLEASE"

    • Hi @William, unfortunately you don't have any options because once 4.3 is on the S4 you're kind of stuck with it (as far as official firmware goes). The S4 doesn't allow downgrading and Knox (on 4.3) keeps track of your flash count, meaning if you decide to manually flash a custom ROM (which would at least solve the problem and means you could have a KitKat ROM on your S4) you will be voiding your warranty, as there's currently no workaround to trick Knox (without Knox you can reset your flash counter if you need to take it in for warranty repair so it looks like you never changed your phone yourself). So you can either wait for the new stable patch for 4.3 to be pushed out by the carriers (Samsung released it recently) or you can void your warranty and flash a custom ROM.

  • When In Indian market gets 4.3 on GT-9300?

  • I am still having my touchwiz crash if I try to view disabled apps.

  • Amit Dec 3, 2013 Link to comment

    doing manual will void warranty?

    • Hi @Amit, not at all, you are simply manually installing an official firmware update you don't want to wait for. It's all official and legit, hence Samsung providing Kies. It's just not everyone wants to do it that way because it seems too technical and would prefer for the over the air update, but that can take weeks.

  • I'm in the US I have at&t the galaxy s3 and still waiting for the update

    • It's early days yet @Wayne. Keep in mind it could take a few days (weeks) to get the update depedning on your region. You can always head to Sam Mobile's firmware page and check to see if the firmware is available for your handset and do it manually.
