These Nexus devices will get Android N and Android O

Google has released a list of Nexus devices to show how long they'll continue to receive software update support. The list gives us a glimpse as far ahead as September 2017, meaning that owners of these devices have a good indication that they'll receive Android N, as well as Android O.

Google's new list on its support page reiterates that Nexus devices will receive updates for up to two years after release, plus security patches for three years, or 18 months after when the Play Store stopped selling the device (whichever is longer). From the list, we can clearly see that the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X will receive Android N and then Android O, with support for these smartphones ending in September of next year.

Here's the list of 'guaranteed' update support for Nexus devices:

Nexus devices are known for having some of the best software update support, thanks to a direct line to Google. The latest Android versions reach Nexus devices as soon as they're released, with no need for owners to wait for manufacturers to modify the firmware. Besides the issue of carriers modifying Nexus firmware and creating bottlenecks for customers, Nexus phones and tablets are generally the fastest way to get updates without manually doing it yourself.

  • Being a Nexus 6P owner I would expect at the very least two years support. If Google stop supporting the Nexus, I will hands down be giving Google the middle finger and never get a Pixle when my 6P gets too old and worn.

  • I also think that Nexus device should have software updates support for a 3 years.

  • I think your dates are off. Two years after release or 18 months after the Play Store Stops selling the device.
That means the Nexus 6P/5X, if they were to no longer sell after today would get support until 6/2016 +18 months, which would be december 2017 not Sept.

I didn't answer your question. Do you think all Nexus should have most software update support. Because I think all phones should have timely updates for a minimum of 3 years.

  • I'm happy my Nexus 5X will get Android, means that I probably will buy a phone as late as Android P will come around.

  • I'm confident the Nexus 6 will get N since it's part of the beta program.

  • Does this mean the 2013 Nexus 7 will or won't get Android N as end of life was last July?

    • I think the source cited has been misinterpreted. The N7 2013, as I understand it, will not go beyond Marshmallow, but will probably still get security updates for a while, though not guaranteed.

  • Android O? ...Am I missing something here?
