'Transparent' Mi 8 Explorer begins its journey on July 24

The Mi 8, the newest flagship from Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi, came in three different variants, the most exciting being the Explorer Edition, a version of the smartphone with a extra biometric features and an attractive transparent back panel. Good news for those of us waiting for the Explorer - the device could go on sale in just one week.

A leaked press invitation from Xiaomi reveals that the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition will go on sale from July 24. Naturally, this refers to the market launch in China, where the phone will be offered for 3,699 Yuan ($553) from 10AM local time.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition will eventually become available in markets outside of China, but there's no official word on when exactly that will happen. Nonetheless, those of you who just can't wait can look forward to importing the device from China. While Xiaomi is making big inroads into Europe and is determined to break into the US, an American debut for Xiaomi isn't planned until the beginning of next year.

What does the 'Explorer' mean?

The Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition is almost the same as the regular Mi 8 which we have been testing here in the AndroidPIT editorial office. It has the same slim bezels, display notch and glass and metal housing as its brethren. But there several key differences, both technical and aesthetic. In terms of the design, the main difference is the see-through back panel on the Mi 8 Explorer Edition, which purports to show off the internal components.

However, there is some visual trickery going on here...experts have examined the layout of the components closely and are skeptical about whether there are real parts being shown on the back. The important thing, unless you want to use it as a blueprint for some reason, is that it looks pretty cool.

The other main difference is in biotmetric technology. The Mi 8 comes with a fingerprint scanner on the rear, while the Mi 8 Explorer Edition features an in-display fingerprint scanner and 3D face recognition, Animoji capabilities included of course.
