Google missed the point of the notch with the Pixel 3 XL

The third generation of Google's Pixel smartphones should be revealed at the beginning of October according to the most recent leaks, and as the date approaches, we're seeing more and more concrete information emerge. Now, photos and video of what appear to be the real Pixel 3 XL have surfaced, and some may not be pleased with what they see. If the point of the notch is to help minimize bezels, Google clearly didn't get the memo.

Some users love it and some hate it, but the notch has installed itself as a high-end smartphone trend which cannot be shaken in 2018. As such, all signs have pointed to the Pixel 3 XL sporting one and nearly everyone has expected it. In theory, that doesn't sound so bad, but the implementation leaves much to be desired. Below, you can see photos of the Pixel 3 XL in action, with its large notch and bottom bezel, which appear to be the real deal given that they match previous leaks and they have the final, iconic 'G' logo on the back rather than the one used on production prototypes.

Notches are meant to allow for all the sensors at the top of the phone to have a place so that the bezels can shrink and the front of the smartphone can be taken up almost entirely by the display. Thus, if a phone is to have minimal bezels, there must be a tradeoff or compromise in the form of a notch. But, the Pixel 3 XL appears to have both a rather large notch and a huge bottom bezel below the display. Google appears to be missing the point of the notch entirely. We've seen this combo before on the LG G7, but it wasn't this pronounced.

Now that you've seen the images, check out the brief unboxing video below:

No to notches, even more no to this ugly POS. I'll stick with my S9+

  • Front-firing speaker housed in the notch along with dual camera and sensors. Second front-firing speaker housed in the chin.

My OG Pixel isn't the prettiest looking phone but was good enough to keep for 2 years. It's been a great phone. It's been reliable and the user experience is second to none. Timely updates (Android N, O and P) and unlimited photo storage are a plus too.

The bezels on the OG Pixel are huge but honestly, I don't actually notice them when I'm looking at the screen.

The chin and the notch are not deal-breakers for me. The software is gonna be great and the cameras are gonna be better than the rest. Added to that, the fingerprint scanner is in the right place.

Heavens, the notch itself is a questionad design choice. But the Pixel 3 XL outdoes everything I've seen so far. Plus, the notch was introduced to avoid the chin amd minimize the bezel.

  • If this is true, well then, it’s absolutely DOG UGLY! I was actually looking at moving from iPhone to Pixel! But I think I’ll stay put with the iPhone although iOS leave plenty to be desired.

Aesthetics of the Pixel line have all been challenging. But that's a weak ding to if it's a good smartphone or not. I preferred the Nexus approach over the Pixel approach

  • they have to actually be stupid to have made this their final product. it's like they've never actually used a smartphone before. almost as if aliens were trying to reproduce our technology, but didn't know the purpose of most of it.

  • This phone is butt ugly. I hope it bombs.

  • I had very high hopes for this phone. Why would Google do anything this stupid? I think their sales of this phone will be effected with this poor design choice. I won't even give the XL a second look. The notch sucks, plain & simple!
