Verizon Droid Eris Not Getting Android 2.2 Update

Computerworld has received confirmation from a Verizon Wireless spokesperson that the HTC Droid Eris will not be receiving an Android 2.2 update for the device, even though some Verizon customers with the Droid Eris still have a year left on their contract. I am not surprised, seeing as how the Droid Eris reached it's end-of-life some time ago, but this decision will not sit well with users that have been waiting for Adobe Flash capability.

Below is an excerpt from the Computerworld article regarding the spokeperson's statement:

Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Raney confirmed that Froyo would not be provided for the Eris. "We have other options in Android devices, so this is part of the normal evolution of our portfolio," Raney said in an e-mail.

Engadget believes there will be more than a few people upset by this decision:

While we didn't really expect Verizon to pull a T-Mobile and support phones that died even before the original G1, we have to imagine there'll be a few ruffled feathers at that particular choice of words. No one likes to be told to buy a new device in order to get a software update.

No word on how long ago this decision was made, or if there will be other options for Droid Eris users upset by the lack of support.

Droid Eris users, let us know what your plans are now in the comments or forums.

    keeping an eye.

  • I do love my Eris.. Have Rooted w/ 4 ROMs to switch between on my SD card.. including a 2.2 Froyo ROM.. so im not missing anything.

  • Theres always craigslist (buying a better but used phone) ..lol..in all seriousness, this eris has been an overall good intro-to-android phone for me. I have been thinking of my next phone and I wonder which one because once a phone comes out a better one comes out right after..at least with those still under contract they can do some android research to see which phone will be their next..I might wait until the 4G is set up before I ask for a new one

  • Well we with the Eris can all run our phone over with our car then get a replacement upgrade.. lol
