New on Netflix: what you need to watch this February

Netflix is our favorite way to enjoy movies, TV and documentaries on various devices. However, it can be hard to keep track of all the cool content coming and going every month. What are the new arrivals and which ones deserve your precious viewing time? In this monthly list, we'll answer these questions with our best tips for Netflix.

Netflix: best shows and movies coming in February 2019

Obviously, romance is in the air, with plenty of courtship-themed fare around Valentine's Day this month. Aside from that though, February sees the debut of some intriguing original series, plus a bonanza buffet of Jaws films.

Russian Doll

Co-created by Natasha Lyonne (Orange is the New Black), Amy Poehler (Broad City) and Leslye Headland, this surreal show tells the story of Nadia, a video game developer living in New York City. During her 36th birthday, she dies. Roll credi... - nope, she finds herself in the world of the living once again, at the beginning of her birthday party.

Seemingly doomed to re-live her 36th and die over and over again in a kind of Groundhog Day-style time loop, it seems a dark twist of fate for Nadia, but given the talent involved, expect plenty of black humor along with all the timey-wimey mind screw.

Siempre Bruja: Always a Witch

What? Did you think Sabrina was the only teenage witch in the world? In Siempre Bruja follows Carman, an 18 year  old Colombian slave from the 17th century who also happens to be a witch. As you can imagine, life's not great for her, and when a spell goes awry in desperate circumstances Carmen accidentally transports herself forward in time to present day Cartagena. She'll have to navigate a society which has seen many changes, but of course: once a witch, always a witch.

Velvet Buzzsaw

Following up on 2014's fantastic Nightcrawler, Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo team up once more with director Dan Gilroy for this dark satire on the pretentious Los Angeles art world. Gyllenhaal plays the dreaded critic Morf Vandewalt, tastemaker among a coterie of scheming snobbish arty elites. When this gang stumble upon the painting collection of a dead artist and connive to exploit them against the wishes of the deceased, a sinister supernatural force undertakes a bloody revenge. So far Velvet Buzzsaw hasn't impressed critics on the level of Nightcrawler, but still promises trashy delights and and sharp barbs aimed at the sellouts of the art world.

Ken Jeong: You Complete Me, Ho

What to watch on Valentine's Day? Why not snuggle up with your loved one and watch Ken Jeong's new special, You Complete Me, Ho

Ho is the name of Jeong's wife, the comedic potential of which shall surely not go untapped. Ken Jeong reflects on his unusual career trajectory from medical doctor to a comedy star and opens up about how his wife’s courageous battle with breast cancer, which led to him landing his breakout role in The Hangover

The Umbrella Academy

The Umbrella Academy is a new superhero series based on the graphic novels by Gerard Way (yes, that Gerard Way, who wasn't ok). The story centers on a group people with special abilities born on the same day under mysterious circumstances and adopted by an ultra-rich mogul who decided to train them into superheroes.

After their mentor's death, they find out that that the world is about to end in eight days. Only they can prevent the apocalypse. Of course, if that wasn't more than enough pressure, some sinister operator is also out to stop them...

How will these super-siblings fare? Between you and me, I'm already sold on the prospect of Ellen Page and a talking chimp kicking ass together.
