Best VPNs for Android: security and privacy online

If you're worried about your privacy online, or simply want to access region-locked content from Netflix or other sources, then you'll want to use a VPN. There are several VPN apps available for Android and each offers different advantages and price models. We've rounded up the best to help you find the right one for your needs.

NordVPN - best for security

NordVPN for Android is an excellent security option. The interface is user-friendly, servers are plentiful and performance is fast. But the best part is the built-in ad and malware blocking. NordVPN also has the advantage of hosting dedicated servers for video streaming and other special tasks. P2P file sharing is allowed.

TunnelBear - best for beginners

TunnelBear's cute packaging shouldn't stop you from taking it seriously. In fact, it's our recommended option for VPN newbies. The app is simple and user-friendly but still packed with features, including a GhostBear option that can conceal the fact that you’re using a VPN connection (to avoid being blocked), and a kill switch (which keeps your IP concealed if the VPN drops out).

TunnelBear has a free offering which allows 500MB of bandwidth per month. You can upgrade to unlimited data with two paid plans, of which the annual plan is the far more affordable and better option.

ProtonVPN - best free VPN package

ProtonVPN is the VPN app that gives the most away for free. It offers unlimited use, a range of servers in various countries, and doesn't log user activity. The free version is great but there are several subscription options that offer increased speed, servers, and even Tor support.

Express VPN - decent all-rounder with a simple interface

ExpressVPN is a popular choice on Android thanks to its user-friendly app and 24/7 customer service. The company has over 1,000 servers worldwide so coverage and speed should be decent for most users. Of course, you'll want to test with the 7-day trial period first. The company is based in the British Virgin Islands and keeps no usage logs, but it does keep some connection (metadata) logs. P2P is also possible.

PrivateVPN - best for Netflix

Sweden-based PrivateVPN, is an excellent choice for getting specific Netflix shows or movies on your Android device; supporting 16 different Netflix regions! In addition, it offers 54 server locations, six simultaneous connections, super fast server speeds, and great encryption.

  • Nord user here too. I found Nord very easy to use even in the very beginning. App is beautiful and speeds are awesome. The only thing I find a bit annoying is that I have to pay for it. Obviously still worth it, but I just wish we were secured online by default.

  • I have used NordVPN every time on Android cell phone and it never let me down in terms of speeds of connectivity. Check out the speed and specs here at Bestvpn.co

  • What about Norton WiFi Privacy?

  • Which ones don't keep your data?

  • I found ExpressVPN to be the most user-friendly, but it's also one of the more expensive. I guess it's a trade-off.
