Bold design theft: Elephone S7 is a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge for less than $100

Samsung employs a design department to define the look of its smartphones. Elephone no doubt has one, too, but that does not stop them from applying the design of the Galaxy S7 Edge very literally to the Elephone S7. Bold design theft, or mere coincidence?

There is a saying in China: "The greatest compliment you can pay a competitor is to copy its success". This proverb is taken very literally at Elephone, resulting in a carbon copy of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. If you can trust the images on Elephone’s Facebook page, then the S7 from the Chinese manufacturer is almost a 1:1 copy of Samsung's successful smartphone.

There are differences, however: on the rear panel, the camera lens is not centered, but placed at the top-left corner, and the LED flash is also placed differently. A more detailed look at the images reveals that the volume rocker and power button both reside on the right side of the frame. It also seems unlikely that the Chinese clone will have the S7 Edge’s unique selling point: the dual-edged AMOLED display.

Also the hardware can not keep up with the Samsung’s. Inside, there is only a MediaTek Helio X25 chip, which cannot hope to come close to the performance offered by the Exynos 8890 or Snapdragon 820 found in the various models of the Galaxy S7.

As is typical of these Chinese knockoffs, the price is undeniably attractive. The Elephone S7 starts at $99.99 and goes as high as $189.99 for the top-end model. Unfortunately, Elephone neglects to mentioned the differences between models on its Facebook page, and the device’s availability has not yet been confirmed.

What do you think of the Elephone S7? Is it a case of bold design theft, or do you not see the similarity? Let us know your thoughts on the Elephone S7 in the comments.

.. as I said no probs on our old Elephone .... family trusts it far more than our newer mobiles ...we buy all thru big China dealer, no rip off over charging as ' BIG NAMED' and ALWAYS FREE posting to NEW ZEALAND .

  • How's Samsung Pay working for you on that device!!

    • Samsung pay? Dont have samsung pay i. The Netherlands and many other countries. We pay in every store wireless with NFC chips wich are present in Elephones too! What was your question? Ah....Samsung is way overpriced and china is showing the world. Apple and Samsung buth SUCK! Even my kids have octo cores these days :-) Would be impossible if only smacksung and apples were the choices we would have.

I used to be a Samsung boy until I got fed up with the price of contracts for the latest phones. My last one was a Note 4, then I gave that to my dad and took a risk on a UleFone Power.

I've had to root it and do a few other things to get it perfect, but now that I have, I'll never buy a high street brand phone again.

I swapped a £500+ device for a £120 China phone and I honestly wouldn't swap back. Battery life is excellent, a couple of updates already and no nasty Touch-Wiz and all the bloat Samsung ship with.

Only negative side is the camera, it's quite terrible!

Best bit about China phones is that you can buy new ones more regularly as the price allows it. There are a lot of poor ones out there, but do your homework (including supported bands - very important) and you can save a packet!

...I've had a ELEPHONE ($NZ127) for 4 years and its use as a spare by 5 family members when our main mobiles go 'whacko' on us ...its been dropped plenty and never goes stupid either ..3 kids different 'rubbish' + wife's recipes + my own 'needs' and ELEPHONE keeps on 'ELEPHANTING ' along .. its always first to packed on our holidays, home or overseas...don't rubbish Asian mobiles until you've brought and used it....'NAMED" mobiles could follow Asian ones....and cut their far EXCESSIVE prices too !

  • Unbelievable!

  • If they throw in lpddr4 a fingerprintscanner in the homebutton and wireless charging im buying!! Mediatek rulez! Its like the AMD vs Intel...I have AMD...

  • It certainly looks attractive. But I've never trusted in Mediatek and Elephone isn't available in India, so it's a no go for me.
