Time for message received in notification incorrect

When someone sends a message, a notification appears with a number showing how long ago the message was sent. But the time the message was sent is showing incorrectly. Sometimes someone would send me a message and I just read the message inside the notification but don't actually open the app, but then looking at the notification a few hours later will show the same message having been received like 5 minutes ago. They haven't sent a new message either as it's still the same message displaying in the notification and in the app itself. Is there a reason why this is happening?

I don't see any settings in Whatsapp to change date and time. My android time settings are already on network. All my other notifications display the correct time they were received. Whatsapp seems to be the only issue. Still can't figure out why.
