After initially being shipped out with Android Kitkat, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 received a steady stream of updates from Android Lollipop, to what seems like its final version, Android Marshmallow in mid 2016. The Android Marshmallow brought with it a breath of fresh air, with tweaks to Samsung's Touchwiz, the Doze feature and an updated S-Pen menu. With Android Nougat rolling out on more and more Samsung devices, we now await confirmation from Samsung if the Note 4 will receive the latest android version or not.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Android 7.0 Nougat update

There has been no official confirmation from Samsung if the Galaxy Note 4 will receive the Android Nougat update. It was noticeably absent on the device update list that Samsung Turkey shared in February 2017, which confirmed the Galaxy Note 5's Nougat update. It is more than likely that the Galaxy Note 4 has reached its EOL - End of Life, and will not receive any future Android updates and remain on Android 6.0.1.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Android Marshmallow update

A list leaked in November 2015, revealing that the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 was set to receive the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update by February 2016. The updates did roll out, starting in Hungary followed by the US carrier Sprint at the end of March 2016. In contrast, the European roll-out was slower, as it seemed to skip Android 6.0 and immediately updated to Android 6.0.1. The update weighed 1.3 GB, which shouldn't be surprising as it's a substantial change.

Along with the usual Marshmallow features such Doze, the Galaxy Note 4 also received a new version of TouchWiz. The changes were however minimal. The only noticeable update that arrived was for the S-Pen, for which the menu was updated stylistically to that of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5.

How to install the latest update manually

First things first: flashing firmware to your device comes with risks, especially if you're using a carrier-branded device. Proceed with caution.

If you are impatient for a new version or wish to downgrade to an older version of Lollipop, you might be interested in learning how to manually install a certain Android version on your Galaxy Note 4.

To do this, you will need to download the factory image of the Android version you want. Many of these can be found over at the XDA Developers forum or at SamMobile.com. Make sure to get the correct image for your device by checking your device model number.

Once you've acquired the correct image, check out our How to get Android Lollipop on your Galaxy Note 4 guide.

I don't know if I could reasonably hate this update anymore than I do. It's confusing and in some places impossible to navigate. The new s pen menu doesn't function at all and a large part of my work is being able to screen cap and note emails. A lot of my data is missing and to top it all off my password isn't working half the time to unlock my phone. I'll be very upset if I have to abandon my Samsung phone for an apple but I will if it means my business doesn't suffer anymore.

Wow - Samsung please stop destroying my phone. Contact info is all scrambled or missing. Ring tones and notifications are reset and I can't find the option to set them back. Maybe I don't like what you like and would really like to leave my phone the way I had it. I am not sure if Samsung did the force download or if that was Verizon, but I should have clicked no everyday forever. New features good - changing my personal settings and making my apps load a black useless screen - BAD

I have had the same issues and found the solution. It is best to hard reset (Volume up+home+power) wipe and factory reset. Then start the setup process (passing the Google Account section). Now your ready for Smart Switch. Should download even if your knox has been modified.

HOW CAN A COMPANY BE THIS F'NG STUPID. It's clear you spend 2 days with the upgrade and you see issues.

Did they even test their phone???

I am NOT going to get this upgrade. It's going to remind me every 24 hours. Great. Might Factory reset now and turn off updates.

How does a company release ass like this???

And how are you guys getting new phones? Do y'all have insurance?? Did you have to pay a restocking fee???

Only phone which kind of caught my attention was the HTC one a9 cause HTC ones just run smooth like butter, only thing is why get it now when the m10 is around the corner. Decisions what to do, it's so hard to make a phone with great battery life and good camera I guess the note 4 was the one but this stupid software update is killing my dream major buzz kill.

I am having a lot of trouble with this update on the Note 4 with T-mobile. The keyboard freezes when I go to text. It appears they are trying to be like the iPhone and show when people are typing and when the message is read. Those are nice features but when my keyboard lags and I have to wait for it to stop freaking out before I can continue to type or erase what I type it become a problem. Sometimes I pull up a text message and the keyboard takes forever to open. Is anyone else having this problem?

The update on note 4 is not trash, the first day I had a battery drain problem but after restarting the phone and clearing my cache out, it now works just perfectly fine with no probs. Let's knock on wood , I can go out and buy a new phone but I don't really Wana waste money over software updates that can be fixed. So for the time being I'm happy with my note 4 still.

The Note 4 update on Tmobile is not trash. Tmobile has had an influx of "common, not tech-savvy, normals" invade the network. They constantly say things are broken when the solution is simply deleting some bad temp data that they put on their own phones.

    Normals make me SICK!

If it's that simple why is tmobile giving me a new phone? The updated made mine useless. I did a hard reset, and it's still garbage. Been a samsung user my whole life, never had an issue like this. The update and phone combo is garbage. Get over it fan boy.

I'm a tech fanboy. And the problems that arise are often because users don't know about their devices. But then again you might be right. Tmobile with all its cheap Normals tend to complain more than any other carrier.

Glad I'm with Sprint and my wife isn't tech-savvy enough to try and upgrade her Tmobile Note 3 on her own.

I was with Sprint for 10 years, no complaints with them, they just didn't have the coverage for where i live now. It was spotty as hell. But when i was on their network i didn't have many issues. Have tmobile now because it works where i live, and yes, they are cheaper. Had no issues until this update, so I am going with the reasonable man theory here. Lived through a lot of updates with 2 carriers on multiple samsung/android devices and never had any issues. This one hits and now my phone is garbage. There has to be a connection. Meaning, the update is trash.

This update is complete trash!! I've nearly thrown it out the window too many times to count. It won't open and run apps, it closes them down and either freezes the app or the entire phone, all of the time. It took 50 minutes to type a 7 word text!! It over heats, and the battery won't charge properly. Basically I've got a $500 paper weight. This is ridiculous!! SO pissed.

5.1.1 is garbage. Note 4 with tmobile. Shuts down randomly, typing stops and starts when it feels like it. Exits apps whenever, freezes when you try to open anything. Battery drains when it's idle and gets hot to the touch. Right now all it's good for is to be a beer coaster. Not sure who to blame. Android, Samsung, T Mobile?

I have the note 4 with t mobile. This is the worst update ever ! After I updated my phone the only thing I was able to do was make phone calls. My phone kept crashing, the battery life sucked, I could receive text but I couldn't read them, it deleted my phone numbers, photos, and the back up I had. T mobile had to send me a new phone. As soon as I got the new phone it asked for the update. I won't be installing it until they figure something out.

Lol. Im in usa California an i also have a g note4 but here in usa the note 4 has been discontinued for about a year and a half you can still find some plces that have new ones but their really not new so most of what you get is a refurbished note4 . On mine it was having the overheating issues but it raN fine . I happened to have shattered the screen an was having it fixed next door to verizion store an i got a sweet deal on the s6 edge plus same screen size but its rolled edge plus it came with a 200..00refund and the oculus gear VR unit for free so really only cost me 100.00 great deal. But i am a fan of the note 4 and have kept it as a backup phone . You all seem to have one thing in common and thats tmobile carriers .like i said i had overheating problem and thats it but im also a Verizon customer. Maybe its time to change carriers cuz the note 4 is a great device.. and samsung is the best android phone this s6 edge plus is awesome and i hear the s7 edge is even faster lol almlst wish i had gotten one of them but im happy with s6 edge plus. I wish you all well and i hope tmobile fixes their issues.

I have the Note 4 that came with lollipop 5.1.1 already pre installed. I purchased the phone not even 2 months ago, and this is my second one and its about to go skydiving. I have no 4G LTE service anywhere I go, and it jumps from 4G to nothing but bars constantly. A week after getting the phone, I have done every single thing possible to fix the issue even with my carriers support. They cant fix it, they send me another brand new phone and guess what? It still does it. So next thing u know, I bitch T Mobile out again and blah blah... They said keep the phone, we will unlock it for you. I now have hard reset the phone and bought a new sim card and got service that I know is the best service for my town, long story short, IT STILL DOES IT!! I think Samsung and their phones are nothing but shit and scams and a waste of tons of money. I would never recommend Galaxies of ANY kind to anyone after my issues with not 1 but 2 brand new phones. Samsung can take that lollipop and stick it in their A**.. Now I have to generate IMEI and install certificates for ROM and all those headaches just to have 4G LTE and service period. Thanks Samsung for your piece of shit!!

Hi Josh, I've had a love -hate relationship with not only T-mobile but with the S2, S4, S5 and now the note 4, lol. I think every carrier and brand has their glitches unfortunately, however I cannot break- up with Samsung. I too had a similar problem at one point with I think it was my S5 before my WiFi card unexpectedly died inside the phone itself and I was forced to replace the whole phone completely (hence how I ended up with the Note 4), but I can't can't remember how I fixed the problem. I think it ended up being a WiFi setting/WiFi calling setting preference along with a network setting or something along those lines. It's so hard to recall when you don't have the phone in front of you to troubleshoot and see what the current settings are, if you know what I mean. Re: the updates, I had one back in Aug or Oct I believe that really messed up my phone; everything that everyone's saying here (battery draining quickly and without warning, phone rebooting & over again, Google mic /voice to text error and not disappearing from screen, problems with screen rotation, battery over-heating, etc.), however with last update last night, those errors have finally disappeared. Thank god too, or else this phone was gonna get it and not in a good way! Put it this way, it's a miracle it's survived this long after the abuse it's taken. So, with that being said, I can honestly attest that it's a good durable phone, lol. I even cracked the outer shell of my otter box case I had on it, if that's any inclination as to how mad this whole situation has made me and I've almost had it for a year. I haven't upgraded due to financial reasons and also because on the newer models I don't like the fact that you cannot remove the battery if needed. I hate how Samsung copied iPhone in that respect. Really dumb if you ask me. Try not to give up yet. If you can hook up with a good techy online and get yours going, I think you'll be really satisfied in the long run.

The update is pushed out by your service provider. You'll get the T Mobile version of 5.1.1 when it's available. 6.0 also.

Nope, if it is a at&t phone, it must be updated by at&t but since he is not on at&t network, at&t won't push it. He will have to manually download the update and flash it (using Odin).

Or as Wesley Gorman said go to best buy and they will update for you.

That's not completely accurate. I thought it was the same thing. I have the SM-N910A and I'm using it on Cricket. Yes it is accurate that it must go through the AT&T servers, but they will release the update to all AT&T phones. Mine updated from 4.x to 5.0 today by going into the software update section of my phone and checking update servers.

Nice update for my AT&T Note 4. Minor changes. No need for a reset imho. Cleared cache, seems smoother. I rather have more minor updates than large ones. Seems to be less issues "usually"that way.

My phone , the 910g model of the note 4 got it just a few days ago. I know it might be frustrating but give it a few more weeks and you'll probably get yours. This update really sped up my device although not making a difference in gaming performance. I'd say it was worth the wait! Stay strong and patient. You might be recieving it soon

I didn't want to update based on the negative experience others have had but I went to the store and they hadn't heard of any issues so I thought I'd risk it. Mine seems fine so it's strange that some are having such a terrible experience with it.

I shouldn't need to "educate myself" on anything other than my phone and it's features to use them. I am normally very tolerant of a few issues here and there so long as I can do what are now considered the basics for smart phone. Having to reboot from time to time or re-connect blutooth devices or find small workarounds for some things is not a big deal for me. The issues I've experienced (after now having had the phone for a year) following this last update which I accepted this past week, are criminal. It locks and freezes constantly, the battery wouldn't charge at all last night leaving me with 0% this morning when I woke up. It shuts itself down pretty often too. I want to (and I don't think it's too much to ask to be able to) restore my phone back to the previous version. I don't think I should have to educate myself on how to use ODIN and how to download and install another ROM to counteract the effect of this software update provided by my carrier.
Can someone offer some straightforward directions?

    • Martin T 1
Martin T Aug 27, 2015 Link to comment

Hi Kalonji (and others with similar problems)
I had the exact same problems as you describe after installing the Lollipop update... and was on the brink of scrapping my Note 4 and going back to my Note 3. Then I read about the ODIN and 4.4.4 ROM... downloaded all the files and followed the simple instructions and Voilá... I had my old phone back! better battery no problems to speak of other than one that finally drove me to try again with Lollipop. After the 4.4.4 it kept popping up with. "there is an update for your phone" etc. it took up space in my notifications menu, it "popped" up when I was exiting stuff and I then had to exit the install update now page. All very annoying. Then I stumbled over a small post on some forum where a guy described another problem which was solved by wiping the phone (factory reset) and then wiping the cache before instaling the 5.x update (this was from 4.4.4 installed by ODIN which was quite easy after search on google pointed to a website explaining in detail how to do it) This had drasticly improved my batterylife and I haven't had any of the other problems I had before.

So to people comming from kitkat 4.x try this before updating, to others try reverting back to 4.x first. remember to take screenshot of your version etc. under "about phone" tab in settings (and ofc. save this to the cloud so you can access it if needed) or just write down all the info on a piece of paper.

  • 1
Brian M Aug 24, 2015 Link to comment

All you people who are freaking out that 5.0 ruined your phone. You need to educate yourselves how to use ODIN and download the factory 4.4.4 ROM. (or any other ROM for that matter) That way if you are unhappy with your update; or you brick your phone, you just re-flash your phone back to KitKat, or whatever, and your happy again. Make sure your you use Kies to backup all your stuff as well (before you agree to the update) If you do that you never have to worry about bricking your phone or getting stuck with crap after downloads. Just have to do some searching and reading.

My phone updated through Sprint and has been nothing but troubles. It's horribly unstable now. Never had a problem before, but now I need a new device and probably won't go the Samsung route again. It keeps going to my lock screen in the middle of using it. Then I get the black screen of death. It take between 3-8 seconds before it decides to unlock. I constantly have to restart for it to work properly, then becomes unstable after about 20 minutes. I wish there were some way to go back to the previous version but I cannot find a way. Bye bye Samsung, maybe when you've figured it out before releasing the Note 8 I may reconsider.

This post, like many others, is completely and utterly useless, it basically says "the update that the carriers said was coming is coming, from carriers, for your phones". I'm more than sure that this poorly-written article was created only for one purpose - to be seen on Google. The authors should be ashamed of themselves, I really regret ever thinking that Android pit was informative... The truth is that this website is just like a million other websites like it, probably created by the same organization, to sell ads and cheap accessories, promoting whatever they get paid to promote, like BGR and Blackberry, what a shame!

I don't think so. I have the Note 4 also. This will be my Last Samsung device so I guess I will never see a TouchWiz Update.

"We have said it time and again that the Note 4 has been treated rather badly for a flagship smartphone, and we really don’t think that is going to change with a minor update like Android 5.1.1. Updates will probably keep coming to the phone for another year, but without the new and improved version of TouchWiz, whatever additions these updates will bring are very likely to be limited to core features of Android. Anyone wishing to get all the fancy stuff from Samsung will have to upgrade to a device released after the Galaxy S6, and the Galaxy Note 5 will be the best bet for Galaxy Note lovers, despite its lack of hardware features that have separated Samsung from the competition in recent years." People seem to have a hard time believing that after this update, it has become the root cause of my phone freezing on the lock screen. I literally have to remove the lock feature so it does not freeze. I will probably do a factory reset but this is ridiculous. Hate my Note 4. I was not fortunate enough to get it when it was running KitKat 4.4, soon as I opened it, she updated to lollipop. I'm not saying the phone is bad, bcz it's not, I bought it bcz spec wise no other phone even came close but the garbage Lollipop update has made this phone the worst Android and Galaxy phone I have ever owned. Overheats, apps crash constantly, randomly restarts and this is the second Note 4 I've owned bcz I swapped it with all the issues I had. Still terrible. I don't know how much longer I can hold out for 5.1.

The upgrade is stupid, my phone was perfect before I got stuck with this lollipop. I would boast about my phabulous phablet to everyone & tell my husband how better my phone was when compared to his Galaxy S5. Once the shittipop was done having its way with my vulnerable precious phablet, I was left with a sticky mess. There's no need to compare the Note 4 to the S5 anymore, now it's just a big S5. Seriously, the Note 4 is an S5! The obvious differences are the size (duh) & the S-Pen of course but on the home screen, look at the app/folder sizes & the spacing between them, this was the biggest difference to me. They are the EXACT same size as the S5! Since the same sizes were used from the S5 lollipop the only way to accommodate the larger area on the Note 4 was to add more space between them. If you do change the font size it becomes too big accompanied with really small font or it's all too small...It just doesn't look right. You are left with no choice other than leaving it the same size as the S5. There are no options to change the size of the folders, oh but you can change the color of it...stupid! Size does matter & so does what I'm looking at on my big black phat phablet! So why have a phone so big that it's even been dubbed as a phablet when it's just a big sticky S5 lollipop? If anyone reading this is thinking about getting a Note 4 save some money & get a Galaxy S5.

Install the Nova Launcher. I bought the Note 4 and installed lollipop. I almost returned it for the reasons you mentioned. I then found many on the Web suggesting Nova. It gives you the ability to control how many icons are on the screen along with many other customizations not available with Samsung TouchWiz. It's easy to install and use like any app. It's awesome and there is a free version in the play store. If it was not for this product I would have definitely returned the Note 4.

But after this update several months back I now hate my phone. Battery suck now..constant wifi issues while all my kids iphone have no wifi problems on the same home network. .Facebook is now slow, buggy and freezes as well as simple Internet browsing now always ends in a frozen blank white screen and then a complete crash..even when I make a call there's like a 5 second delay from dialing to when it responds. This update was a total sham!

I totally agree!! My dialer hesitates at LEAST a good 5 secs between dialing and actually placing the call. It randomly restarts, the battery life sucks, compared to what it was, the play store will sometimes take me top random apps, and everything is just plain slow 🐌!

My biggest issue with this update, happened just a lil while ago... I had a notification pop up from "lollipop"- I clicked on it and it took me to an "app" page where I was able to view all of its processes and permissions, clear the cache, and force stop it. I began reading all of the permissions and W.O.W.!!!!! Its allowed to read my texts, turn on/off/change my Wi-Fi, take photos, videos, use the voice recorder without my knowledge, delete ANYTHING, also without my knowledge OR consent, and a lot more. SERIOUSLY???????

Something I have noticed though, is that my S-Window is suddenly more useful. My girlfriend has an LG-G3 and she loves the functionality of her little circle thing (which I've been jealous of) but I was never able to find out how to get notifications of incoming messages in my S-Window before. Now, I do.

My phone is unlocked, running on O2. Is it going to be a jump from 5. to 5.2 or something silly, aka like S3 jump from 4.1 to 4.3. Hope not, that was a disaster.
I bought the phone 2 weeks ago, and the first thing I did was to turn off Updates, due to hearing horror stories of 5.01. Looking for 5.1.

I have an unlocked international Note. I used Samsung's Kies software for Windows and the app immediately let's you update to whatever newest OS Samsung releases, bypassing your carrier. I've had lollipop for weeks now and my carrier hasn't even announced a release date for their locked subscribers. Please try that, despite all the negative publicity people give Kies. I do hear Kies is less supported on Macs so that may be an issue. Also, on windows make sure you are signed on with an administrator account. When I used my normal limited sign in, even though I had the administrator override password, Kies was not able to update the phone. It took me a lot of troubleshooting to figure that out.

Also to those who wish to NOT factory reset their phone after updating, suck it up and do it. It will guarantee a better experience and you need to learn how to sync your contacts and such eventually anyway, may as well now lol! Cheers and good luck

New way to push customers to keep spending money on the newest devices. They tell us its a upgrade, they tell us its a update with improvements. But I say the updates are a marketing tool designed to only run smooth on the newest devices. And if we are happy with a phone that's 8 years old and still works great. Well that's just not how business is done.

So what they don't tell you is... We will let you enjoy your phone or tablet for a couple years. Then we are going to force a Over The Air update. That will render your device slower then a solar calculator in candle light. And then the masses will be forced to upgrade the entire phone for another $600 device. I still enjoy my old S3 my wife now has, and my brothers S2 that works great for a non cellphone WiFi device.

Boycott updates, and protect the devices that still do what you need them to do. Before you are forced to spend more money on a new phone, you never needed before the last update.

The first thing that happened was all of my SD card info wouldn't connect to its internal memory counter parts. I had to unmount the SD card and remount the SD card and that fixed the issue. I'm still wondering what AT&T put into this second 5.01 update? Does anyone know? AT&T website and community blogs have zero info on this secondary 5.01 update...

Don't care for the change in color scheme with the new update. Don't like the pumpkin orange headline view for the messages at all! Users should have the ability to choose their own background color schemes - and I'm not referring to the even more hideous color space schemes under developer options. Does anyone know how to change the default background color schemes? The current ones are not really appealing at all...

Have you guys even have looked into your camara settings and check the things that are missing. It's unbelievable how we buy a phone and then suddenly we get the wanted update then becomes like a different phone. Missing smooth recording in the video settings . My phone is working fine but I see lots of you guys are having more problems than me so I feel your pain . We better hope that samsung address the issues with lollipop on the next update . Am already thinking about going back to LG devices.

It has been renamed to 1080p 60 which is 1080p at 60 fps. So smooth motion is still present. It can also be found on recording size with the same label.

I have the Verizon Note 4... Running 5.0.1.
I put it off for a week (forced to reschedule the install every day, because Verizon wants to annoy you until you update.) It is running stable on my device, but it has only been a couple days.

The most noticeable difference so far? The overall design, and the much improved default keyboard. The keyboard got a fresh facelift, which will be obvious to everyone, but it has been much better at placing the letters I want. This may be a placebo effect, because of how much it reminds me of an iOS keyboard (which is the one thing I miss from my iPhone days,) but I don't think so. I have been having far fewer errors and auto-correct problems. That one fact alone made the update worthwhile.

OTA updates usually get rolled out gradually over a carrier's customer base. This helps prevent the servers from crashing, because if they just opened the floodgates then everyone would try updating at once.

I remember my Apple days... Updates came out and slowed all Apple services down for a full day or two. Apple has the capital and reason to invest in massive server farms, while most carriers can't justify the costs just for software updates on a select few devices at a time... Especially prepaid carriers like Cricket.

My phone randomly decides to call people, randomly hangs up on people all the time, some apps freeze, oh and when my phone decides to call someone it freezes so I cannot hang up on the call to where I have to power it down my self, and it randomly decides to say my SD card is not working to it working....so much trouble from this update.

One thing I haven't noticed anybody mention is with this update my smart screen feature is finally working. Okay, so I have a few issues with this update to the 5.0.1 platform. First, since I have updated my note 4 all of my app notifications comes across in a banner form which I feel is an invasion of my privacy. If I let someone see my phone to watch a youtube video and a whatspp message, the entire message will appear on the screen

Second, I keep reading about this new notification setting with he update by pressing the vth key, I don't have this ability.

    Please help.

Just updated last night (AT&T 5.0.1). Took about 2 hours to download over wifi (50mbps). After installation, I rebooted my phone. So far, everything works great! Phone is way snappier - it's at least as responsive as my Nexus 5 running Lollipop. No app crashes or reboots. Launch and interface are faster. I've been watching battery closely and so far with moderate use today, it seems like it's unchanged.

Tip: With the Note 4, you can still enable mute on your ringtones. Just disable vibrations: Settings > Sounds and Notifications> Vibration intensity or Vibrate when ringing.

Now I'm going to try a factory reset today to see if this fixes it, I ha e been told it will by many Note 4 users, good luck everyone I will update this post after the factory reset, have a great Note 4 day....

It took about 20+ minutes for the download to start for some unknown reason. Until the Google Play Store updated to the lollipop version I didn't have access to any app that was installed to SD. Its not Samsung, it's the carriers. They make the final decision when to release software updates. Motorola is in direct partnership with Google. Google knows and builds its software around Motorola and the Nexus lineup. Most carriers tend to wait until they feel it is ready for all their bloatware( speculation). Aside from the always up to date Nexus lineup, they are still inferior products to the Samsung flagships in the world. For the sake of context, I wrote this in a very friendly and calm voice in my head. LOL that sounds crazy, well maybe I am. Hope you get your update soon.

Samsung is not your problem. Samsung's largest income flow is from Verizon customers. Verizon is a garbage company who wants to control everything on your phone. They are forcing companies to lock bootloaders and remove android functions prior to allowing the phones on the network. This is not for your safety, it is to create more avenues of money grabbing for Verizon. Until other carriers build out a network like Verizon has built on the backs of fleecing all its customers, Verizon can and will control all that you do with a phone. Go ahead and go to Motorola. they were the first major phone maker to crawl into bed with Verizon and lock out their customer phones. Good luck with that.

WARNING TO ALL AT&T NOTE 4 USERS: IF YOU HAVE ANYTHING IN PRIVATE MODE, UNPRIVATE THEM BEFORE INSTALLING UPDATE!!

Apparently, AT&T or Samsung took their sweet time rolling this update and yet they've overlooked that whatever was in private mode is no longer accessible in Lollipop. The data is still there in the folder but it's encrypted and private mode no longer unlocks it. So anyone who has already updated and didn't unprivate them, your only options are to wait for another update to fix it which is god knows when or downgrade and then upgrade again.

Updated last night (March 24, 2015). It’s a large download and took a while even on Wi-Fi. Device got pretty hot during the update. It cooled down afterward.

Performance doesn’t seem to be affected, but this is just my first day. Boot time is double. Used to be about 30 seconds, now it’s 60 seconds.

I’m looking forward to getting my wife’s phone updated so I can try out the HD audio (if it’s available).

Overall, I see a few minor cosmetic changes, but nothing significant. It will be interesting to see if the “under the hood” changes make a difference.

Ok, so, just to simplify my question a bit... Obviously the purpose of doing a factory reset after an OS update, is to wipe out any old system files, data, info, ect... That may conflict with the update, thereby causing stability issues and various other problems. With that in mind, What I really want to know is: If I use my Kies backup to restore the apps and data that I DO want back in my phone, will that also restore the files, data, or whatever, that I DO NOT want back in my phone, (those type of files & such that may cause problems after the update?)

  • Kristi Brown 1
Kristi Brown Feb 11, 2015 Link to comment

Ok, I have a question, and any feedback would be greatly appreciated! I have the Galaxy S5 on T-Mobile. So, obviously I have yet to receive the update to lolipop, but I have been reading every post I can find to make sure that once I do get the update, I am prepared to make the transition easy and make the most out of the new OS! The one thing that I keep seeing is the suggestion to do a factory reset after the update in order to prevent and/or remedy any possible issues. My question is this, I have done a full backup of my device through Kies, so, once I do the factory reset, would it be advantageous for me to use that backup, or, might that just re-install any elements that may have caused problems, thereby rendering the whole factory reset, useless? Obviously, I would like to be able to just use my kies backup to get back my apps and such that the reset deleted, but if that is going to cause the reset to be essentially useless, then it will definitely be worth the extra effort to rebuild my apps and such from scratch! Any recommendations on this matter would be greatly appreciated!! Thank You!

It's an S series (likely the 5). Easy way to tell is that the S series' corners are far more rounded than the Note series. The lock screen, however, looks quite fake, judging by the notification icons at the top of the screen, and the phone/camera icons at the bottom. None of those resemble what the icons actually look like, and I can't really see an update changing that.
