The Pixel Fold (review) is Google's first book-style foldable smartphone which featured a rather unique ratio and smaller size compared to alternatives like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 or even the newer OnePlus Open. However, it now appears Google will make the switch to an even bigger footprint with the Pixel Fold 2 later this year.

Google Pixel Fold 2 could look like the OnePlus Open

While the Pixel Fold 2's alleged design and key specifications have already been published, there is now a notable change that affects the device's form, at least when it comes to the display. According to consultant and leaker Ross Young, the anticipated viewing real estate measurements shared earlier were slightly off compared to the final size, and mentioned the second-generation Pixel foldable will feature even wider displays.

Young listed the Pixel Fold 2 boasts a main display measuring exactly 8.02 inches wide while the cover display is tipping to measure 6.29 inches across diagonally. Along with the sizes, the source didn't divulge the shapes of these displays. However, he added the main screen has a “close” square ratio and the secondary is noticeably as wide as the front display of the current Pixel Fold.

Based on these details and what we know, the Pixel Fold 2 is shaping up to follow the OnePlus Open's (review) footprint with a 6.3-inch exterior panel and 7.8-inch primary panel as opposed to the Galaxy Z Fold 5's (review) taller and narrower ratio.

Will the Google Pixel Fold 2's release be delayed?

In addition, it was mentioned the production of panels for the Pixel Fold 2 is set to begin in April. The timing suggests the expected launch date of the handset could be pushed back further, supporting an earlier claim that Google is delaying the Pixel Fold 2 launch.

It also lends weight to the possibility of the device being equipped with a Tensor G4 chip if it will indeed arrive at a later date than the usual May or June window during Google's I/O 2024 conference. Hence, it is expected the Pixel Fold 2 will be made official alongside the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro around this fall.

As for the other changes in the Pixel Fold 2, a live hands-on shot of the foldable revealed a revamped camera island behind. Google seems to incorporate a new type of hinge that could result in the above-mentioned iteration of the displays. Apart from that, a repositioned inner selfie camera in punch-hole layout will most likely be part of the design.

Software-wise, the upcoming Pixel Fold 2 should boot on the latest Android 15 version and enlist new on-device generative AI capabilities.

Which current foldable form factor do you prefer? Do you think an enlarged Pixel Fold 2 will increase the usability? We're eager to hear your opinion.

I still remember how amazed I was when I first got hold of the Nokia 3210 back when I was a kid, and it was during that time I developed my love for technology, particularly for mobile phones. I started sharing my knowledge through writing in different blogs and forums back in Nokia Nseries era. I even make videos before where I put different phones side-by-side. Today, I'm still an avid enthusiast of smartphones, but my interests have evolved into smart devices and electric vehicles.
