How to download and install the Google Play Store

Update: New "show installed apps" toggle feature and layout for top charts

The Google Play Store is a treasure trove of apps and content. It's sometimes necessary to install the Play Store manually if you unintentionally uninstalled it or want to roll back to a previous version to avoid bugs. Here's how to download and how to install the Play Store, along with details of the new features each update introduces.

A note on Google Play Store version numbers

The numbering system for Google Play Store versions may seem a little confusing at first, but it's easy to get your head around. If the jumps between numbers seem odd, that's simply because Google didn't publicly release the versions in between. Note that new Play Store versions can delete old features as well as introduce new ones, so we've detailed what each new version brings in at the bottom of this article.

Download Google Play Store APK

Please note that the following guide is for owners of an Android device with a licensed version of the Play Store installed. We recognize that is sometimes necessary to re-install or roll back the Play Store.

The latest version of Google Play is 6.9.15 and this version hints at several upcoming new features, including the ability to test apps without downloading them to your device. For more details, head to our what's new in Google Play section and if you're having problems, check out our guide to troubleshooting Google Play.

How to install Google Play Store

The simplest method for how to install the Play Store will already be quite familiar to you if you're an avid follower of AndroidPIT: just install the Play Store APK manually. An APK is the Android equivalent to an .exe program on your computer.

Instead of downloading an app from the Play Store, you simply install it yourself without the Play Store's help (see our guide on installing apps outside of Google Play). This is extra useful when the app you want to install is the Play Store itself.

There are two ways to get the Google Play APK installed on your device: directly on your phone or with your computer. We'll do the easy option first.

Install Google Play (phone method)

  • Enable Unknown Sources by going to Settings > Security, then ticking the box next to Unknown sources. Don't be alarmed, unknown sources are simply locations outside of the Play Store, which is critical if it's the Play Store itself that you want. (Don't forget to uncheck this option once you're done)
  • Using the browser on your device, go to XDA Developers forum or APK Mirror to download the APK for the latest version of the Play Store.
  • You may get a message warning that "this type of file can harm your device." Ignore it (trust us) and tap OK.
  • Open the APK (you can tap the completed download in your notifications menu), read the new permissions (if any) that the new Play Store version requests, then tap Install.

Install Google Play (computer method)

If you don't have a data or Wi-Fi connection on your device, you can download the APK to your computer instead. The same process applies:

  • Enable Unknown sources on your device.
  • Using the browser on your computer, go to XDA Developers forum or APK Mirror to download the APK for the latest version of the Play Store.
  • Connect your device to your computer with a USB cable and copy the APK over to your Android device.
  • Launch the APK, accept the permissions and tap Install.

Google Play Store troubleshooting

Google Services Framework is a crucial service that lets the Play Store communicate with apps on your device, allowing for automatic updates and so on. If these functions stop working, or you experience other problems, then there may be a problem with the service, and you should clear the cache on Google Play Store and Google Play Services. To do this:

  • Go to Settings > Apps
  • Scroll down to Google Play Store, tap it, then tap Clear cache.
  • Do the same for Google Play services
  • That should fix most problems you'll experience with the Play Store

Note: depending on what type of device you have, it may need to be rooted in order to manually install the Play Store, but that's a tutorial for another day.

What's new in Google Play

What's new in Google Play: the latest new feature

The latest feature to be added to Google Play is a "Show installed apps" toggle button. This has been added to app lists in the Google Play Store, but not search results. It appears that the update is available to all users, so next time you're looking through a list of top games for something new to try, you can filter out ones you already have. In addition to this nifty feature, there is a new UI layout for numbered top app charts.

What's new in Google Play 6.9.15

The latest version of the Google Play Store hints at several upcoming features. First and foremost, Google has implemented an 'App Streaming' function into searches so that you can test an app without downloading it onto your device. This was pointed out by Android Police, who claim that the apps load on a remote server and are then streamed to your device and that this is not the same as Google's upcoming 'Instant Apps' feature.

Though app streaming is currently only found in the 'Apps' tab when conducting an online Google search, it would appear that this will be rolled out to the Play Store at some point in the future.

Additionally, version 6.9.15 indicates that a Play Store purchase interface specifically for VR could be in the works. Typically, making purchases in the Play Store requires the use of your smartphone to complete the process. Code in version 6.9.15 suggests this could soon change.

What's new in Google Play 6.2.10 - 6.5.08

Since February, Google has released what appears to be four different versions of the Play Store, designated by the ending letters A, B, C or D. This would suggest Google is conducting A/B testing on users. From what we can tell, these new features and changes include things like the removal of the scrolling window of featured apps on the Play Store homepage, icon changes, and other relatively minor things. One thing all the builds seem to share in common is that the Play Store now displays Download pending when an app is queued for download, rather than showing the animated downloading bar.

What's new in Google Play 6.0.5

In a helpful move for both developers and users, Google has added the ability for developers to generate promo codes, allowing paid apps and games, as well as in-app content, to be made available for free.

Google also made a less substantial alteration to how reviews are judged by users. Now there is a small thumbs-up icon, just like on Facebook, that can be used to show agreement with a user review of an app. As part of this change, the spam button has been relegated to a side menu next to the thumb. It's a subtle change that means it's now easier to give positive feedback than negatively report reviews, which was likely abused by many.

What's new in Google Play 6.0.00

The biggest change in Google Play v6.0 is the long-awaited visual overhaul previewed by Googler Kirill Grouchnikov almost a month ago (shown below). The redesigned Google Play Store now divides content into two categories: apps and games, and entertainment. Previously, the front page showed six tabs.

What's new in Google Play 5.10.30

Google Play version 5.10.30 came quickly after version 5.10.29. There are only a few changes that we can see, the most notable of which the new Google Play font in the search bar, along with the ability to copy text from the Description and What's New section.

We still haven't seen the new front page mentioned above, but that may well be Play Store version 6.0 or a server-side change. Other changes in the code that aren't live yet reference books being grouped into series and app size information being displayed at installation time.

What's new in Google Play 5.9.11

The first thing you'll notice in Google Play 5.9.11 is a new pop-up window letting you know about granular app permissions in apps compatible with Android 6.0.

The team at Android Police revealed further documentation for fingerprint support, an uninstall manager (probably tied into Marshmallow's RAM Manager), location-based recommendations and new visuals when refunding apps.

I don't want to do factory reset since almost all other things are now ok, after much much trying.
But re-reading the instructions i noted that it says "...clear the cache on Google Play Store and Google Play Services..." Trying that - I don't find Google Play Services from my applications. Should it be installing with the same apk or is that separate? - If so where can I find it?

  • perasma Aug 9, 2015 Link to comment

please add these 2 steps to this guide (if my answer is correct)...
    - after factory reset , unmount SD (might keep some cache there)
    - correct the date. (optional)

i think the mounted SD was the problem to my situation. God i was trying for a day to fix my spyphone.

Tried both methods and the clearing data and it does not work. My GT-I9502 seems to install google play ok, but half second after starting it just stops again. I have never had google play working in this phone because it is hardware originally for China Unicom, so there is some bloatware in it. I have now android 5.0.1, but had same problem with several earlier versions. I guess I need to dump Samsung and go with some other brand.

  • Yes i have it enabled..but when in tap on Instal..wait some second and appear "App not instaled".

    • Try downloading the APK from a different link on Android Police. Sometimes I get weird download links that don't work. The dead giveaway is when the APK downloads in two seconds.

  • Hi Kris...i accidentaly delete play store on my Allview A4 Duo (Micromax a58 Bolt) and i downloaded latest version from androidpolice. When i try to instal , appear the message "App not instaled"
    Thanks.

    • Have you made sure you have ''Unknown Sources'' enabled? Go to settings > About phone and tap on Build Number until the notification pops up. Then back up to settings again and you'll find Developer Options in your menu. Just check the box for Unknown Sources (and don't forget to uncheck it once you've installed the APK).

Hi Kris, Thanks for all your feedback. Could you just help with a recommended youtube link please? i am so tired right now, i think i'm beginning to go crazy! i've been at this for the last 6 hours straight!

    • You just need to install ADB Tools on your PC and enable USB Debugging on your phone. You can see those instructions (for an unrelated issue) in this article: http://www.androidpit.com/how-to-record-screen-on-a-nexus-5

Just read the first paragraph under ''What you need'' - there's also a video about installing the Android SDK but you only need to download the ADB Tools which we have a link for in the article). Then you download the Gapps package/Play Store APK and enter ADB commands to push them to your phone. Here's a decent walkthrough from XDA (it's old though, so you'll need to get the current Gapps etc): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=992242

      • Femi Jul 7, 2014 Link to comment

Hi Kris, Thanks again for the links. I got to download ADB, followed the second link on xda, but couldn't go beyond step 2.2 with the following commands:
        adb shell mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p5 /system
adb push [the path to your SDK tools folder]\system system/
        adb reboot

First command fails, while for the second, i do not know what folder is being referred to. I tried reading through the entire post, but no guide or pointers as to what may be wrong.

      • Femi Jul 8, 2014 Link to comment

I think i may have messed up with the stock bootloader because every time the phone reboots, it boots up into the bootloader. So if the install doesn't complete before reboot, its lost as i have to manually then reboot the phone.
When i try to factory reset, its same thing. the reset process starts but when the phone reboots, it just goes into bootloader where i can only shutdown the phone or reboot. either options will not complete the process and return the phone back to the way it was before i did the initial reboot.
I am trying to find a way to fix this...

      • You can always flash stock firmware again. That should fix the boot loop issue. Then you can factory reset again and clear the cache partition to avoid any other bugs occurring. Good luck!

      • Femi Jul 9, 2014 Link to comment

Hi Kris, thats exactly what i did and all is fine now. Thanks again for all your help.

      • Excellent, glad we got there in the end @Ferni!

  • Femi Jul 7, 2014 Link to comment

Hello Kris, thanks for the reply.

In my bid to get the E8 up and running, here's what i've done so far:
Tried unlocking bootloader and rooting following the details in link below:

I think the bootloader unlock was successful, but doubt the rooting was. Reason i doubt rooting was successful is because i got to install Titanium Backup and the app gave a warning saying root access was still unavailable.

I would like to start the whole process maybe on a clean slate, if possible, or simply just get root access for sure.

Kindly share with me details of how to flash GApps package through recovery, and yes, i have KK 4.4.2 on my device.

Would also love steps/guide to get to root please.

    • Hi @Ferni, you can simply install an app from the Play Store called Root Checker to see if you got root successfully or not.

To get the Gapps package you want, just take a look on XDA. There's lots of different versions available, so jsut pick the one you want (ie. some only have the bare bones Google apps, others include Gmail, YouTube, Maps etc) and get the one for 4.4.2. Just download it to your device.

To flash it, just turn your phone off and press and hold Power and Volume Down to enter the Fastboot menu, then use the volume buttons to highlight Recovery Mode and press power to confirm. Then select install zip (or however it is worded) and find the Gapps package you downloaded. Hit power to confirm and that should be it.

Depending on how ''restricted'' the device is it may not work, but this is a good first try. Sometimes just installing the Play Store will automatically pull Play Services. If the APK won't install make sure you have Unknown Sources checked off in the security settings of your phone.

Hi Kris, thanks for the feedback.
I did forget to mention that i got the phone from China, so it doesn't come with any of the Google Apps applications, so no play store, which is why i am trying to install Google Apps in the first place. All i have is an HTC Marketplace which is littered with Chinese only apps, and other apps are translated into Chinese, making it difficult to make sense of most of my search results there.

For the Recovery Mode procedure you stated, i am unable to get to the point where i will be asked to select the zip file i wish to install.

So i do have this dilemma now, what more to do? I have searched through xda and still reading up stuff, but my issue is the time spent to filter through so much info to apply to my particular situation.

      • Ah, of course! You have stock recovery, my bad. When you select Recovery Mode you'll see the Android. Press volume up to get to the recovery menu. Because you don't have custom recovery you don't have the option to flash zips from SD card, so you'll have to do it via an ADB command. To avoid this post becoming a million miles long, you could search YouTube for the process as it is pretty straightforward but a little involved.

      • Hi Kris. I Just came across this post. I have the same phone and can't use any Google services. Is there a step by step of how to root and get the services work if I don't want the Chinese apps on? I can find a lotabout the m8 but not the e8 / m8sw

    Hi Kris,

I have a bit of an odd problem. I recently got the HTC One E8 (also known as M8Sw dual sim), but it strangely didn't come with any of the native Google apps - Play Store, Gmail, etc.
I have downloaded and installed the APK for the Play Store, but the app never loads. So i went ahead to download the APK for Google Services, installed and now i keep getting this pop up message saying "Unfortunately, Google Play services has stopped".
The Gmail app i downloaded and installed also doesn't work.
The native OS is Chinese, the phone was purchased from China on my recent visit there.
What can i do to successfully load all the Google apps and possibly also remove all the Chinese stuff still encoded in the device OS?

    Femi

    • Hi Ferni, as far as I'm aware the E8 is not yet planned for international release, so it's not a simple matter of flashing the international firmware (which would include Gapps). If an int'l version does appear you can simply take that route.

In the meantime you can try flashing the Gapps package through recovery. You just need to get the right Gapps for your Android version number (which I'm assuming is 4.4.2?) and flash it. If you have no idea what I'm talking about let me know and I'll explain in more detail ;)

If you want to remove the Chinese content pre-loaded you'll need to root the phone and delete it that way. I haven't heard of a root exploit for the E8 yet though, but you could try towelroot (as long as the build date of your kernel (in Settings > About Phone) isn't later than June 3rd).

    • I have the exact same problem. Did you manage to get Google services to work on the e8. If so can you let me kknow-how?

  • Hey! I got a problem with my tablet. It hasnt got google play store and I downloaded many times following your steps. But when I'm about to open it, it closes in an instand, showing me a message telling me " the application google play store has stopped unexpectedly. please try again".Can you help me solve this? Thank you in response.

  • Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks, Mr. Kris.

  • Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Should have checked your bio first.
