The Huawei Mate 9 is the new phablet to be released by the Chinese manufacturer. Huawei has great ambitions for this device, as it wants to establish it as a competitor to both the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and the iPhone 7 Plus. The company is also hoping to attract some of the customers Samsung lost with the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco. With the device due for release in early 2017 in the US, we're expecting the Huawei Mate 9 to become one of this season's best smartphones.

1. It’s the only large smartphone on the market

The Huawei Mate 9 is a genuine phablet, offering a gigantic 5.9-inch screen. Competitors like the OnePlus 3T, the Galaxy S7 edge or even the iPhone 7 Plus only offer smaller 5.5 inch screens. The Mate 9 is a clear break in the market and will thrill those users on the lookout for a big smartphone. Despite the size of its screen, the Mate 9 has - fortunately - been clever in its dimensions and boasts a compact design that is identical to iPhone 7 Plus.

The final nail in its competitor’s coffins is that the Mate 9 is an elegant, seductive smartphone. With its classic design, it will entice business customers who want an understated mobile. The finishes are excellent and the metal is pleasant to the touch. In short, the Mate 9 will not disappoint.

2. It has a great camera

With the P9, Huawei inaugurated its partnership with Leica, the iconic camera manufacturer. Huawei also enjoyed the benefits its new dual sensor system. The Mate 9 is an opportunity for Huawei to go even further in its performance.

You’ll find a 12-megapixel color sensor (RGB), paired with a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor. The result is exceptional. The Mate 9’s strength lies is in its contrast levels and the camera capabilities in poor lighting conditions. If you like black and white photos, this is one of the best smartphones for you.

Finally, the video facility hasn’t been forgotten. You can film in 4K. There is no optical stabilizer, as here the digital stabilizer steps in to do all the work.

3. Dignified performances for a 2016 top range smartphone

Inside the Mate 9 you’ll find the latest HiSilicon processor, from Huawei’s subsidiary, specifically the Kirin 960 with 4GB of RAM. This SoC has a traditional quad core Cortex-A53 which works at a maximum frequency of 1.8 GHz and more importantly, the new ARM quad core Cortex-A73 that runs at a maximum frequency of 2.4 GHz. According to Huawei, this processor offers an automatic learning algorithm, which ensures a quick and flawless experience even after 18 months of continuous use. As for graphics, you’ll no longer be left behind with the Vulkan compatible Mali G71 MP8 chip.

In practice, the Mate 9 is a delight to use. It's multitasking facility is very quick, and the benchmark test scores places it among the best out there. Have a look at our review for more details.

4. Android Nougat

While the latest Android update may have been available since the end of August, only a few smartphones are currently able benefit from it. With the Mate 9, you won’t be disappointed since the smartphone already offers Android 7.0 and also the latest EMUI 5.0 version. You’ll have access to all the latest Nougat updates, all with the simplicity of a Huawei user interface.

Over time, the Chinese manufacturer appears to have ditched its similarities to iOS and moved more towards Android. The device even allows you to install an application drawer. This is proof that there is still some hope for Asian manufacturers.

5. An excellent battery life

Its predecessor had a strong reputation for its hardware, and happily the Mate 9 is no exception. The most recent Huawei baby has a 4000 mAh battery, which is capable of supporting a full day of intense use. If you are a more moderate user, it’s possible to get at least two days of battery life out of the device.

Fast charging is also available for this device. Here the Mate 9 uses “SuperCharge” technology that offers 5A fast charging, which is a 50% increase from the previous device. You'll have enough battery to last you all day after being connected to the terminal for around 90 minutes.

  • this productis very useful

  • I love the products of Huawei, and Huawei Mate 9 is pretty awesome. Its battery life, operating system and camera, cool!!!

  • oh dear, please do your own review and not an ebay type bad chinese to english translation copy .

  • Seems like a great phone, despite the author's grammatical and technical errors (400mAh?). But does the Mate 9 sport stereo speakers? With such a big screen it would be a pity if it doesn't. And, well, dear Pierre, this is not the only one to have a big screen (Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra being just a single, clear example).

Hey, we fixed the error with the super small battery ;)

      • Merci! :-) but there's still room for improvements...
In the very first lines you missed a "Mate" writing "the Huawei 9".
Then there are sentences like "You’ll have access to all the latest Nougat updates and from the simplicity of a Huawei user interface", which is grammatically incoherent ("and from"?). Etc.
Ps: I'm writing this because I care about AndroidPIT. Please improve these little things.

        Hey again :)
I did fix the most obvious mistake (Huawei 9), we will have a closer look at the rest tomorrow. Thanks for pointing it out :)

  • Chinese crap

    • That is horribly short sighted. Forbes named 200 of the world's most respected companies. Huawei was one of the only 6 telecom companies on that list.
Huawei is, on the world stage, considered a pretty high end manufacturer. One that is talked about in the same way people talk about Apple, LG, Motorola or even pre-bomb Samsung.
I am all about buying American. DO IT! (Waves a US flag). However, high end phones coming from other countries pushes our technology forward as well. In other words, competition is good for the industry, good for capitalism and GREAT for the consumer.

  • 400mh battery? it's missing one zero :)

  • It isnt the only large smartphone, since there is the LG V20 and the pixel xl.

  • I am Samsung fan but when I read all this... maybe next year I'll switch to Huawei . Samsung b.s. like Knox leaving behind :-)
