Galaxy Note 6: 5 features we'd love to see

The Samsung Galaxy Note 6 is going to be big in 2016. With the significant design evolution between the Note 4 and Note 5, expectations around how Samsung will push the Note 6 above its predecessors is building. Here are five features we'd love to see in the Galaxy Note 6.

4K display

Thanks to the Xperia Z5 Premium, we’ve seen that jamming a 4K display into a smartphone is feasible. With the large, rich displays that the Galaxy Note series is known for, it makes sense that Samsung would consider making the leap to 4K on the Note 6.

Would this make a noticeable difference to how the display looks? At the ridiculous pixel density you could expect from this – the Z5 Premium has an almost over-the-top 805 ppi – you’ll be getting a very richly-defined image on the display. We’ve questioned whether 4K is necessary on smartphones, but the truth is, you could certainly expect more manufacturers to go this route in 2016 and beyond.

An insane camera

With the Galaxy S7 rumor mill spinning out the possibility that the megapixel count will drop, this might also be the case for the Note 6. What could we expect from a move like that? Well, the aperture – f/1.9 on the Note 5 – might be widened even further, and could enable the overall sensor size to capture more light.

We might also see the inclusion of Vivid Photo or Timeless Photo, which would be a similar technology to rival Apple’s Live Photos. This would likely work with Force Touch, meaning you can start a live video simply by pressing down on the display.

Bigger battery

The Note 5 has a not-too-impressive 3,000 mAh battery so we’d expect Samsung to make some headway into increasing battery life. The battery life of the Note series hasn’t been terrible, but with so many pixels to push, a larger cell would be a welcome addition to the Note 6.

This would be even more important if Samsung did decide to power up the display to a higher resolution. Android Marshmallow’s battery-saving Doze feature would allow battery life to be extended without any increase in battery capacity, particularly on Notes with many apps installed, but who would argue with a larger cell?

microSD card slot

This is a big one for many potential Note 6 customers. Although the Note 6 will almost definitely come in three storage capacities – 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB – customers who prefer to use microSD cards would consider this addition a huge plus.

We’ve heard that the return of microSD support on the Galaxy S7 is a likely possibility, so it would also be on the cards for the Note 6. Dropping this feature from the Galaxy series was a sour point for many hardcore Samsung customers, so a more flexible storage option would be sure to win back their favor.

Force Touch

Apple did 3D Touch on the iPhone 6S, making its display sensitive to pressure, and we’re likely to see it become a common feature in the Android ecosystem as well. But why would the addition of Force Touch be any good?

There are some interesting software features that can be developed around it. As mentioned above, Vivid Photos would offer a new way to engage in smartphone photography. You could also preview content and notifications without having to open apps.

But, as with iOS, this would require app developers to update their software to work with this new feature. But once developers master Force Touch, there is a lot of potential to improve how we could engage with the Galaxy Note 6.

Are you excited for the coming Galaxy Note 6? What features do you want to see most? Tell us about them in the comments.

  • I'd like to phone notes 6 I'm going to buy it but the only 12-megapixel camera and small maybe I do not understand .... and the 2MP very little .... I hope there is a microSD battery lasts much okay and greatness and wonderful to me like big phones

  • I have note 4 and I love it, on the note 6 I like to see the micosd back and the removable longer battery, also water and dust proofing and when it comes to the stylus have it optional . I can't wait to see what the note 6 will look like I would love the edge version.

I don't care about extra megapixels and more fluff features. I'm still on a Note 4 because the Note 5 has an integrated battery and no micro-SD. If those features aren't present in the Note 6, I won't buy it, period. If I wanted a pricey "walled garden" experience, I would just buy an iPhone...

  • Without microsd and without removable battery it's a no go for me. I will not buy another Samsung. And I am going to need Samsung to start updating their devices more than twice. They need to update them for several years like Apple since theyre always so concerned with Apple. They need to change the S pen entry back where it can go in any kind of way and remove the eject-o pen-o feature. I have the Note 2, Note 4 and Galaxy Note 12.2 tablet. I still use all 3 devices. I prefer them over my Apple devices.

  • If the screen is gonna be 4k, they gotta justify that by stretching the max the dimensions by at least another .3-1 inch. AMOLED is already the best on the market, so 4k would be overkill and screw up their ability to maintain their standing in a market that has for years figuratively awaited each quarter with underspec'd iPhones in-hand, whilst standing with arms crossed, toes tapping the ground, and chins up to look above the throngs for Samsung's next trick... :s

  • Removable battery and a micro sd slot...without these two essentials I would not buy the Note 6....better to stay with my Notes 3 and 4 ...I do not have any problem with them...and to move to a Note 6 would need to have the above two is that simple....I stayed away from Note 5....did not want it....not one tiny bit...because of the above reasons....never understood why these clever people want to trap a battery inside the machine...never understood this stupidity...except as a justification for writing in 'A THROW AWAY BY DATE' in the phone...pure 'evil' in my books...and these amazing arguments to make the gadget good looking...slim...a sort of eye candy...and with a show of affluence........a phone is not so difficult to design by these manufacturers...with all the important factors addressed...not really
.....but what a fantastic way to do business...and ignoring the essentials as a mere side show and not very important to the actual business.of writing in a date of obsolescence....inevitability of a product with a very limited lifespan.

Please bring the IR back, I skipped the Note 5 because it didn't have IR blaster, removable battery and SD card.
And I will be skipping the Note 6 if those 3 are not included. Well at least the IR blaster is a must have for me.

Please bring the IR back. Such a handy feature when you are travelling or don't want to invest in a universal remote. I agree with others 4k is a bit overkill for a small screen. Micro SD also a yes for me.

  • Swappable battery & SD but only splash proof (waterproof reduces sound quality).
I like Moto X Pure concept.
    USB-C 3.1 & screen/kbd dock.
Improve Stylus functionality in all apps, much better than force touch.
Less reflective screen, utilise black background for contrast/battery & night reading.
Integrated sleep tracking, notification & similar into the stylus (modular or optional add on)?

  • That's a welcome back to Samsung

  • We dont really need a 4k display i think we are just fine what what we have the ahoukd be focusing on the battery and the software

My current device is Tab Pro 8.4 and im promised a Note 6 before its released! Im so looking forward to it. And hope that it wont turn bad

The features it needs to win me back are a removable battery, Micro SD slot, water resistant and dust proof. A 2k screen is fine 4k like the others have said it just overkill on a small screen. They also need to get rid of the glass back to slippery for me.

I will certainly go along with storms requirements. All apps to be downloadable, not imposed. My Note 4 screen is perfectly good without 4K- just adds to cost of phone. A spare battery is lighter and takes up less room than some of these mega charger things available. Swappable batteries are perfect when there is no wall plug anywhere near, and could be a life saver. Not bothered with waterproofing because I never let my phone anywhere near water.
I will always buy a phone now that is unlocked from Carphone Warehouse or the like- no extra carrier crud imposed.

Stock Android with the SPen goodies as apps, not OS bake ins. Abandon TW and the added programming costs and maintenance. Learn what Google themselves learned and also Motorola.

4K on a handheld? Not worth it at this time. Too much panel cost and battery impact for no appreciable improvement.

    Fast Charging.

Bring back the swappable battery and SD. Give us waterproofness. Yes, that's a hard combination. I'm OK with screws for the battery case to help with waterproofness.

Universal LTE bands as with MOTO X Pure and skip selling via the carriers. Easily unlocked bootloaders also.

    Skip the force touch.
