Samsung Galaxy S9 Active likely in the works for this year

We already know that the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ will be unveiled February 25 at MWC 2018. But Samsung fans who prefer substance over style may be holding out for a more robust version, the Galaxy S9 Active. Leaked codenames indicate that Samsung is indeed working on a new hardy handset.

It looks like fans of the Galaxy S Active series have something to look forward to after all, according to a list of leaked codenames courtesy of XDAdevelopers. The list shows the internal codenames of a variety of devices speculated to refer to J-series devices, Galaxy Tab devices, and many mysterious entries that can only be guessed at. But of particular interest here are the names that contain the word 'star'—referring to the Galaxy S9 series.

Aside from the codenames 'star' and 'star2', associated with the Galaxy S9 and S9+, we also find 'astarqlte', which XDA's Mishaal Rahman pegs as being the Samsung Galaxy S9 Active with Snapdragon chipset.

How will the Galaxy S9 Active look like?

The reasoning behind this being that the 'q' in the name indicates a Qualcomm Snapdragon device (based on previous experience with Samsung’s codenames), while the “a” refers to 'Active'. While this is merely an educated guess, Samsung has been releasing an Active version of their S-series phones every year since 2013, so it seems more than legitimate to us.

Good news for the less coddled among us that need a smartphone that can take a few knocks here and there. Perhaps, following the trend of the previous generation, the Samsung Galaxy S9 Active will eschew Samsung's signature sexy curves for a flatter display. Watch this space for more information as it breaks.

What do you think of Samsung's Active Galaxy S devices? Will you be waiting for the Samsung Galaxy S9 Active?

  • I'm not buying any more Samsung fake flagship junk anymore, I think the bloatware is ridiculous, the battery life sucks, and they are doing to go with the same 12 mega pixel camera for the 3rd time. not much of an upgrade for the money they want. my S7s battery is so bad I have to take a external battery pack with me when I leave fo the day. my S8 isn't much better. I don't use Facebook or isagram but I'm stuck with both of those battery draining apps, wast of storage too. Bixby, fucking JUNK! I can't stand that peace of shit wast of resources. that VR shit is another wast of resources, battery destroyer, stupid junk the fill what could have been a great device with. get rid of The 3d junk, the bixby, Facebook, Instagram, and put a up graded canera , not the same one the s7 and s8 have, and a real battery that lasts 2 days. there are mid range devices that have better battery life. and stop the bloatware bullshit. Then maybe ill buy a Samsung flagship. im not too impressed with the slow updates either, still on Nugat 7.0 lesser devics are on oreo 8.0 already . just string hs along with minimal updates and upgrades.

Do you're Homework.. I am a faithful Samsung Active S7 is a Beast. The S7 active can go 48 hours whit out the need of charging.. it has a gaping 4000MHA battery to respond also S8 Active has the same battery.. get one and you will not be disappointed...

      • I Just picked up an s8 active and so far I'm loving it! I just figured out that I could change the menu color from glaring white to black with the new theme,Wallpaper, and AOD modification section . phone switch took 15 minutes top transfer my old device top the s8 active. Why is there solittle articles about the s8 Active? great phone.

      • I have the S8 Active for T-Mobile it's a great device. battery lasts about 48 hours with minimal use, heavy use close to 24 hours . I disabled all the bloatware, the ones I couldn't uninstall. . I hate Bixby that button really messes me up at times wish I could reassign it. It has a 4000mAh battery . I'm liking it more an more.

  • I bought Active only, because it has a flat screen! I hate curved screens, wich distract from and distort images! Besides, it doesnt feel like holding a bar of soap...

The bevel was a USEFUL and IMPORTANT part of the phone - it both protects the screen from damage AND, more importantly, is what you hold on to when holding the phone! So sick of Samsung trying to be Apple - trading practical and useful for "this looks kinda cool".

    • me too! "doesn't fell like holding a bar of soap" that's a great analogy! mymom had here s7edge 2 weeks and it slipped out of her hands and cracked the screen on carpet yeah I said carpet . I also have the s8 Active.

  • If Verizon carried the Active due to the battery size 4000mamp I would purchase in a blink. But I had to settle for the s8+. Which in itself is a great phone for myself after using for 9 months. As fast as the day I purchased!
