Sony Xperia X Premium planned with HDR display

Sony's smartphone division has been been experimenting with display technology in recent times. After the Xperia Z5 Premium, the first smartphone with a 4K display, the Japanese company is working on its next smartphone display experiment. So will the Xperia X Premium come with native HDR support? Here's what we know so far about the Sony Xperia X Premium price, release date, specs and features.

When it comes to smartphone displays there are various panels, gadgets and technologies on the market. Sometimes these are useful, but a lot of times their usefulness is questionable, such as with the 4K display of the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium. Its resolution is a huge 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, but in daily use it isn't activated often enough to reduce energy demand.

But now a report has surfaced on the tech site PhoneRadar and purports that Sony is working on an Xperia X Premium with Full-HD resolution. The report suggests that Sony wants to set a new record for display brightness. The 'White Magic LCD' would allow maximum brightness of 1,300 cd/m². By comparison, the display of Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge can reach a maximum value of 855 cd/m², according DisplayMate.

The bright display from Sony Xperia X Premium would therefore natively fit within High Dynamic Range (HDR). For photos and videos, this would provide better image reproduction thanks to an HDR display's high contrast and vibrant colors.

As nice as that sounds, once again, this could very well be useless display technology by our estimates. Just as the 4K display of the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium was, so too could the HDR display of the Xperia X Premium be effective only with certain applications, such as the photo gallery or video player. It's unlikely that this will provide great everyday usage at this stage.

Do you think an HDR phone display is useful?

  • Sony everybody is right better screen is good but please create something different like Samsung introduce retinal scanner that every body will love like DSD high quality music player and converter. With high res-audio speaker. And one more thing your after sales support in the Philippines is one of the worse. Many Filipino like Sony but after they disappointed with your after sales support they will switching to Samsung. Samsung have very good Customer servers and after sales support. For example, your authorized store did not follow the Philippine law about 7 days replacement, they will fool people by saying with 7 days replacement but if you encounter a problem with your unit after a day your unit will be sent to service center instead of replace a new one from the store. Another one is the accessibility of your service center you need to go in the place farther than mall and hassle to every client. I hope you will improve your service center to attract more customers.

I would really want to try this out. I don't like the saturation on Amoled as colors don't look natural and are too eye popping!

  • sony 's display lags behind samsung and many others due to that awesome high saturation amoled screen which lcd can never get if this native hdr solves the problem then sony is good to go or sony should switch to amoled

    • Completely wrong. This is a Quantum Dot phosphor based LCD screen (first in a smartphone) with a QD backlight and WRGB subpixel structure. It has local dimming so this backlight is split into a million pieces so every single pixel can be turned on or off to get pure blacks and peak whites which leads to infinite contrast. This QD LCD has a saturation that far supersedes AMOLED since it can match the BTU.2020 colorspace which is 2x purer color saturation than AMOLED. AMOLED is superior to all LCDs except this one. AMOLED in every way is inferior to this WRGB QD LCD display. Sony and JDI did an excellent job here this time.

I think its a great news ,But the sad part of full HD and 4k phones are that they are the battery killers ,the screen consumes more battery than anyother Phones due to their vivid colors and brightness they offer and not many Phones have amoled screens and Its more or less the same with QHD phones.

  • In phones full HD and 4k are nearly about the same.I can't find any quality issues in my full HD screen. So I think QHD is more than enough.
