Two things HTC may have gotten completely right with the One M10

The popularity of the HTC One series has been waning and has left many wondering how much longer HTC has left in the Android world – us included. But a freshly leaked image of the HTC One M10 suggests the Taiwanese manufacturer has made some significant alterations to its flagship series, and we think they've gotten them just right. Is HTC about to make a comeback?

Boom goes the BoomSound

The BoomSound speakers were a hallmark of the HTC One series, regarded by many as the best sounding audio speakers on a smartphone. However, they seem to have been dropped from the HTC One M10, judging by an image leaked yesterday (shown above).

I agree that BoomSound speakers do produce the best smartphone audio, but the problem is that they still can't compete with a dedicated Bluetooth speaker. Though it may have given HTC a marketing boost and lead the critics to hail its “amazing sound”, superior audio on a device for which superior audio is not essential element is a very minor – albeit commendable – win.

Dropping these speakers suggests that HTC may now be directing energy in more worthwhile directions. In the same way as it relegated its Ultra-pixel camera technology, HTC might have just learned that Boomsounds speakers weren't such a good idea, and the One M10 could be better for it.

HTC logo go-goes

Few people liked the HTC logo strapped across the bottom its phones. Few people like logos in general, unless they are for premium goods and they want to look smug (because Ray-Bans really are so much better than those other black, plastic glasses).

But the problem with the logo wasn't just that people could immediately tell your device was an HTC (the horror!), it's that it took up an unnecessarily large part of the display.

Critics have leveled this complaint critics at HTC for a while and it looks like HTC has listened, or else just made a good choice on its own, if the leaked photo below is to be believed.

With the removal of the logo, the One M10 should have a far better screen to body ratio than the One M9's 68.4 percent ratio, which can only be a good thing.

Something it might have gotten wrong

I’ll just leave this here…

What do you think about the HTC One M10 design? Give me some thoughts in the comments.

  • The thing with HTC is they made a poor excuse of the bezels ("there are important components beneath") and people assumed it was due to BoomSound speakers. However, look at the Xperia Z5 Compact (don't know why Sony gave the regular Z5 wide bezels still) Moto X Style and the HTC One X9 - all of them have stereo speakers with considerably less bezel space than the M9. Also, the speaker of most other phones is on the bottom anyways, so it's still taking up space there, no different from BoomSound.

For the 10, the main reason they ditched BoomSound appears to be that Fingerprint sensor which does take up space. Why not put it on the side of the phone like the Xperia Z5 or Nextbit Robin?

  • The speakers should have stayed. How is it that the only time they build exciting phones HTC limits the release to China? The one M9+ Aurora Edition should be an option... but of course it isn't, they might accidentally make a profit. But, maybe the Nexus deal will give us more compelling hardware.

  • Htc has beautiful phones from the one series The htc logo on the screen being gone is nice Boomsound is the main feature of this phone I don't think they should get rid of it They should put the scanner one the back like lg Make the speaker grills even Kinda like the M7 and a new design to the grills and make the screen like 5.2 or 5.5 waterproof it then put a good camera u got phone of the yr

  • Guys I'm getting htc m8 for USD 220 dollar to be exact 221.46 dollars on eBay should I buy it.?please let me know. Thanks

  • It is a shame that HTC is falling about. They have made great phones, albeit the sub-par cameras. And now getting rid of boomsound and designing a less unique phone is depressing. One of my favorite phones was my EVO 4g LTE with the built in kickstand. If I had boomsound on that, I never would've gotten right of it.

Would be a pretty sweet deal if they package this with a new boomsound bluetooth speaker. I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

  • I've owned the One M7 and M8 , and my son loves his M8 ... and both of us find the BoomSound speakers invaluable for games , music , HDV for phone calls etc. Not always will we have a Bluetooth speaker available . Without BoomSound we may very well opt for other brands and its features, as HTC would have dispensed with a great feature that made it stand apart from other smartphones . Ashamed, and an end of an era .

  • I disagree on the boom sound. Dual front speakers are a must for my next phone, it really makes a difference even if you use it once in a blue moon watching a YouTube video with friends. I still have a Nexus 5 and find myself cupping the bottom with my hand to get sound to project forward and the absence of front speakers on the 5x is a deal killer for me (as is the lack of a SD slot and a somewhat expensive cost compared to the midrange phones out there

As for cameras just take good shots, the tech is all babble to me

    Well written article.
I've been a huge fan of HTC since the days of the HD2 (running Android) and the HTC one.
I moved away from the M range precisely for the reasons mentioned in your article.
I for one, no pun intended, look forward to HTC again making some brilliant statements and moving far away from their repeated mistakes on the M Series.
So much so, this model should perhaps become the N series or maybe NB (Notably Brilliant) again.....

  • The reasons for taking away thw boomaound speakers is dumbest reason ever. They need to fire whoever wrote thia article.

  • Htc is exceptional. No doubt.

  • I agree but disagree. The boomsound I speakers may not be the loudest but they still produce crisp quality that no there phone can produce with their speakers and it's a signature look that sets apart HTC from some phones. I honestly don't want the stupid bezel because it takes up so much screen space which is so true but I don't know if they're trying to intentionally mislead customers thinking this may be m10. Who knows, we'll have to wait and see for the reveal of the phone. I would hate if they did the no boomsound those front facing speakers are a big buying point honestly because so many people listen to music, watch TV shows and movies etc on phones nowadays. Hopefully they can release an amazing looking phone with all the needed features plus more. I have an HTC One m8 and it's one the best phones I've owned. The HTC One m8 still works like a top of the line flagship.

  • I agree with CHOOK, without front facing boom sound speakers and a nice big screen (more than 5.7") I'd rather buy an older Nexus 6. the sound quality isn't as good but without boom sound, but atleast they're loud front facing speakers.
If this is the final product I'll be divorcing HTC after eight and a half years. it's apparent that HTC is not listening to what their customer base once and was content with putting out yet another Shitty iPhone clone. I guess wonder stock tanks because nobody's buying their phones maybe then tthey'll listen to Customers.
Honestly what good is anything more than qHD display on anything but a TV, and what the hell do you really need a fingerprint scanner for it's only good for using Google or Android pay if you want your phone to be secured from other users come up with one of the ten thousand (If its 4 digit) Plus lock codes. enough with the USELESS freaking gimmicks!!. HTC's putting this crap on theirr phones because everybody else is rather than being unique

  • Considering the fact that people use smartphones much like smaller tvs audio would have to be considered to be much more then a minor part of the whole, blu tooth speakers are louder but in some ways they still do not match having stereo surround right there in your face , if boomsound goes so do i , im not the only one that has a problem with them dropping it, this could be a serious problem for htc.
