developers console, app statistics downloads vs sales vs refunds

Hi,

I couldn't find an explanation / faq so I am asking here: in dev console we have a tab "app statistics" with downloads / sales / refunds. My question is what is a definition of download, how different is it from sales? We're not giving apps for free, why there is a difference between downloads and sales (counting in refunds of course)?

I might be wrong, but I'm guessing the discrepancy between sales and downloads is because downloads are cumulative between versions - and plain reinstalls probably add to the download count too.

Apps can be downloaded, but then returned within 24hrs. I think this counts as a download but not a sale.

My first thought was what Adrian and Jeremiah said, in that a downloaded update may count as a new download, as well as the 24 hour refund period.

That would make sense. But stil, it would be great to get an official explanation.
