Xiaomi is a Chinese mobile phone company founded by Lei Jun in 2010. The company received mass media coverage after it released Xiaomi Phone, a low cost smartphone in September 2011. The company also developed MIUI, a custom firmware for mobile phones, based on Android. Xiaomi sells most smartphones online, in small quantities. However, Xiaomi pinned their success on the combination of short supply and high-quality, low‐priced products. For example, the Xiaomi M2 is similar to the leading smartphone brands Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5 and yet it costs 50 percent cheaper than Apple’s phone in the Chinese market. The model also boasts better graphic performance, thanks to M2's combination of a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 CPU and Adreno 320 GPU. Xiaomi has so far sold 300,000 units of M2 smartphones, though the company intentionally limits production of the device to capitalize on the consumers’ wants and monitor surpluses. Lei forecasted seven million smartphones to be sold by the end of 2012.
