Removing the (1) on the message app

It's the second time my Samsung S3 shows to have one message but there is none. How do I remove the (1) on the app/icon

All messages have at least (1) message - the OP's. i.e, yours in this case.

hi@Selwyn, are you referring to the SMS app on the S3? As in, you see a notification number on the icon to say you have a new message but there isn't any? Just check to see if you have an unread message somewhere down the list, and if that isn't the problem, you could always uninstall and reinstall the app.
