Looping erase in factory reset. Is rooting/ custom Rom possible?

I pressed the factory reset key in Settings and have been in an erase loop for 2 days. Can I root without an Android OS (presumably it is partially erased). If not, can I install a custom Rom or does it require Root?
Any suggestions as to what I can do now would be appreciated.

(Tablet Teclast X98 Pro dual boot)

Urgency gone! I would still like answers to the above but after leaving the tablet plugged in for over 2 days it reverted to factory bloat ware condition! If this happens to you the solution appears to be just wait!
