[noob] How do I implement an API?

Pretty much as the title suggest's, I have no idea where to start on API's and their implementation. Every written tutorial seems to leave out a vital step like syncing the gradle, adding code to the compiler, importing files to the libs etc... can someone give me a layman terms explanation please?

first what API are you trying to implement?
once you know what exactly you want to implement then ask google and follow the tutorial
