Samsung's Galaxy S24 range appears to bring substantial hardware improvements from its predecessor based on existing leaks and reports. However, the new flagship Android smartphones might also offer up to seven years of software updates, possibly making them the first non-Google devices to match the Pixel 8's (review) software policy.

Without citing its source, Android Headlines reported that Samsung could announce the Galaxy S24 (Plus) and Galaxy S24 Ultra with up to seven years of software support. If this were to materialize, it will be a major last-minute surprise as the South Koreans are set to officially debut the Galaxy S24 on January 17 in San Jose, California, two days from now.

While the seven years of updates could only mean security patches and minor software fixes, the news outlet claimed that this includes seven Android upgrades as well. In other words, the Galaxy S24 will receive three more Android upgrades compared to the Galaxy S23 with four upgrades. Hence, we will see the upcoming Galaxy phones updated all the way to Android 21 from Android 14, on par with what Google pledged with its Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro (review).

Furthermore, it is safe to say that Samsung will also match the updates with the availability of spare parts. This is logical if you want to continue supporting the device. There is a chance that the same software and components assistance will be adopted in Samsung's future devices such as the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 foldables.

In addition to the extended software update policy, the Galaxy S24 will also introduce built-in and cloud AI capabilities via Galaxy AI. Namely, there is a new Galaxy Generative Edit tool that is comparable to Google's Magic Editor and a real-time translator, among others.

The Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Ultra will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC in the US while other markets could see the standard models run on the Exynos 2400 chipset. Both chips have already appeared in benchmark repositories, having gained significant performance improvements that would be essential in prolonging the lifespan of these handsets.

What are your thoughts about seven years of software updates on the Galaxy S24? Will you consider buying one just because of this? Share your answers with us in the comments.

I still remember how amazed I was when I first got hold of the Nokia 3210 back when I was a kid, and it was during that time I developed my love for technology, particularly for mobile phones. I started sharing my knowledge through writing in different blogs and forums back in Nokia Nseries era. I even make videos before where I put different phones side-by-side. Today, I'm still an avid enthusiast of smartphones, but my interests have evolved into smart devices and electric vehicles.
