Options: There are a few options for updating your HTC One M9. You can wait for the over-the-air (OTA) update to be pushed to your device automatically, you can manually check for the update through your Settings menu (Settings > About > Software Updates > Check Now), or you can downloaded and manually install the update from your manufacturer's website or HTC itself.
You'll get the same update in all cases, it just depends on how long you want to wait to get it.

HTC One M9 Android 5.1.1 update
No major carriers have updated the HTC One M9 to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, and it seems very unlikely that they will now with Marshmallow planned for the device.
However, you can get CyanogenMod 12.1 for your device, which is based on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. The ROM is currently issuing nightly builds, which are experimental versions of an as-yet-unfinished piece of software. Plenty of bugs are to be expected, so don't download and flash the ROM unless you are comfortable with unstable software.
