New research numbers from Android Developers indicate that of the devices reached using their research method, Android 2.x devices now account for over 70% of devices accessing the Android Market. Android 2.2 devices now account for 28.7%, with Android 2.1 accounting for 41.7%.
Engadget writes that when you "consider that back in May those pesky 1.5 and 1.6 versions were on a whopping 62 percent of Android mobiles, you'll probably agree that phone makers seem to be getting their act together in terms of delivering Google's latest wares in a timely fashion."
Phandroid observes that the "chart shows a slower rise for Froyo than Eclair, but adaptation has begun to pick up at a rate that matches the first big explosion of Android 2.1 back in April."

Android Central notes that the older "versions of Android continue to fall, with Android 2.1 down to 41.7 percent (from 59.7 percent), Donut down to 17.5 percent (from 20.3 percent) and Cupcake at an even 12 percent (down from 15.3 percent)."

the reason cupcake version 1.5 has not fallen a great deal is cause when Samsung brought out the Samsung galaxy portal (I5700 aka spice) from what I have read is they have no intentions on upgrading these phones. The number of users that are not happy with Samsung are many, I am one of them that is stuck with a Samsung that will never be updated yet other Samsung phones older then the galaxy portal are getting is updates. Makes Samsung look bad not updating the os on one of there popular phones here in the UK
