Samsung Gear smartwatch coming up soon

It looks like the Galaxy Note 3 won't be the only exciting device being revealed by Samsung at their UNPACKED 2 event in the days preceding the IFA consumer electronics fair in Berlin next month. On September 4th it looks like we'll see their new smartwatch called Gear as well, according to Sam Mobile.

While there's already plenty of wearable devices on the market and tons more planned, the Gear is particularly exciting because it's a Samsung device, meaning it will be optimized to work with Samsung smartphones as base stations. The Note 3 in particular, one can imagine. This means you'll probably get a more seamless and feature-rich experience from the device if you already have a Samsung phone or tablet, and we'll let you know all about its features if it does indeed get debuted early next month.

It's important to note that the image above is not a press render or even a leak image, but rather a render based off the design patent diagrams that Samsung filed last month in Korea. Sam Mobile have, however, 'confirmed' the release of the device at the UNPACKED event, via an unnamed source. The user interface visible in the renders is also purely artistic license so we can expect to see something at least mildly different.

The device will feature a large, curved-screen, flexible AMOLED display and who knows what else, and will be designated SM-V700. The Samsung smartwatch has been discussed in tech circles for quite a while, and ever since the patent was filed and inventory lists started showing the device for research and development purposes, the evidence has pointed towards a double launch alongside the Galaxy Note 3.

We'll give you all the specs as they emerge and give you the full run-down when the new smartwatch is demoed. Would you buy a Samsung smartwatch before considering another third-party device?

This one I would buy at once. I'll wait to see the look of it and specs, but I like the above design. I already own a Samsung device, so it would be just right to buy this.

It's definitely the first smartwatch design to come out that I actually like, and that flexible AMOLED screen would be very nifty, especially if it is removeable as some others will be. The biggest question for me is: price. Maybe I can convince Samsung to give me one in a couple weeks? You know, for research and development purposes...

@Kris you can simply get such things?
    I am jealous...
but especially in this case Amoled has more problems than goods, burn-in and darkness are the problem where energy saving is the good thing.
If I get one I will probably need an anti-reflective screen cover...

I just meant if no one's looking maybe I could 'get' one. (Just watch my press credentials get revoked now!) But with any luck we'll get a review device not long after IFA. I'd really like to see what the Gear is capable of.

If it looks like that I will almost certainly get one, I've been weighing up between a Sony SmartWatch and a Pebble for a while, but the Samsung one could certainly sway me, especially as I currently have a Samsung phone and my next one will probably be a Samsung too (possibly S4, S4 mini or Note II)

Yeah it's funny how other brands may lure you into the desire to buy a device, and then a big gun strolls in and sweeps you off your feet. Poor little guys... But knowing what Samsung are capable of make this a very tempting purchase!

I just read via Bloomberg that the Gear's screen will not be removable, nor flexible, just curved...oh well, you can't have it all I guess.

Maybe those features will come with a future version Kris, would be cool if it did. I still think we're probably still going to be seeing a really great device
