Android 4.3 for Galaxy S3 finally arrives in India

Kris Carlon
64

Namaste to all my friends in the subcontinent, it's a great day for Galaxy S3 owners, who are finally seeing the Android 4.3 update arrive on their Samsungji. It's been a long time coming, and I've been asked more times than I care to remember when exactly it is coming, but the 400 MB OTA update with a build number of I9300XWUGML4 has now begun rolling out.

The update brings with it all the standard Android 4.3 action that other I9300's have received internationally, including TRIM support, which tells your CPU to stop paying attention to empty data blocks (deleted fragments of your internal storage) – you'll just need to have TRIM on your S3 for a day, have the screen off and over 70% battery for the first TRIM run to occur. It'll then happen once a day following this, meaning your S3 on 4.3 will be much snappier than it used to be on 4.2.2.

Other additions with the Android 4.3 firmware include support for the Galaxy Gear, if you're silly enough to spend your hard-earned rupees on one, the new Samsung keyboard and S4 user interface elements. Open GL ES3.0 graphics is standard, as is Smart Bluetooth v4.0. You'll also finally get access to multi-user restricted profiles. But the biggest news in the update is TRIM. With any luck, S3 owners in India won't suffer any of the problems that plagued the UK version of the update and many US customers as well.

You can grab the update on Sam Mobile's Firmware page and flash it manually, or simply hit up Kies and get it that way if you can't wait for the OTA update to arrive.

If you've got the Android 4.3 update let us know how you like it and if you're experiencing any issues. Happy Republic Day for January 26th!

Hi @Rohit, considering the issues that have been reported on every initial 4.3 update - including the one in India - I would suggest waiting, at least until the stability patch version comes out and you're hearing good things.

I'm really surprised that after all the problems internationally that Indian carriers would still put out the same problematic update. The update method you choose makes no difference in the end, but Kies will get you the update faster than waiting for the OTA version.

Hi @Karan, basically TRIM is a ''little bit'' like defragmenting your PC hard drive. It basically isolates the ''dead'' data points on your device (where data has been deleted) and lets the processor know it can ignore them, meaning your CPU won't be scanning your whole storage, just the parts that actually have data stored on them (or that's my understanding anyway!)

Hi @Samarth, the actual availability of the update can take weeks to arrive (because it largely depends on the carrier you are with). We wrote an article a while back about how Android updates occur based on an infographic that HTC released (search for . The good thing with Samsung though is that with Kies you can update the firmware manually as soon as it is available rather than wait for it OTA. You can do this with other OEMs too, but Kies makes it super easy.

Hey folks! Just dont go for 4.3! It has not landed bug free in India..I updated my phone day before yesterday via kies and found just few minor bugs that time but now I am facing many irritating bugs in my s3. My phone goes to deep sleep after being in standby mode for sometime which can be solved only by a battery pull out only. It also gets a screen blinking error sometimes. The battery has degraded a bit and also when someone calls my phone it doesnt shows up on screen well..sometimes it just doesnt shows the calling screen and sometimes it shows for few seconds and then dissapear. No light effect, no adding widgets option on lock screen and then these probs!
the update isnt good at all..samsung has acted really very stupid this time I swear..after such a controversy on this update they have again seeded such a bugged update. Shame on them.

I will head to service centre soon to get my phone downgraded back to 4.1.2.

of course, that's not the problem. the problem is that the firmware has a country code which also decides which updates you get, unless you do it "manually"...

one more question i have sir, see my friend was telling me about resetting my firmware to the indian version of 4.1.2 and then i could get the new update regardless the original waiting time...would this be feasable?

thats what I meant with manually.
either you flash the CSC (country code) of the country and update then, or you simply flash the 4.3 with a CSC that gets its updates faster...

Good advice @Anupam, a factory reset after a firmware update is always a good idea, not only to minimize the chance of any problems on first boot but it's also a good time to do a fresh start anyway. I wonder if the stability patch will now be rolled out in India too? Sad to hear the update wasn't completely painless.

Hi all in india. Try checking iut sammobile. They might have an firmware for you to download. About missing firmware. Have you all checked what version of s3 you have? That might explain the "missing" firmware. For people in india that have bought from another country, you might have to wait for an official one from that country. Or you might have to download and manually update. It could brick you'r phone, so please be carefull about that. Be very carefull about it. On the other hand, it might work the same way as installing cyanogen-mod.

Just checked on sammobile. 9300 firmware 4.3 can be downloaded from sammobile or via kies. Just fire up odin or kies.

  • Anders Bagger 7 months ago Link

Starting up kies won't hurt the phone. Regarding installation of indian firmware on a s3 bought in other countries. I can not say anything. It might work the same way as installing cyanogenmod, or it might brick the phone because an upgrade probably depends on what specifich type of region locked software you have in the first place. I am not an expert on that. All i know is, that you can install whatever custom rom you like, if you root and flash a custom rom with odin.

  • Anders Bagger 7 months ago Link

Yhat said. The custom rom have to be designed for the specific type of phone you want to flash. You know. Drivers and stuff like that. ;-)

Such a shame the lessons learned on the international update didn't filter through to Indian carriers. With any luck the stability patch will arrive shortly. In the meantime you can email a complaint to make sure the carriers know there's a problem.

issues after update to Android 4.3: Phone has got slow, RAM usages always 730MB or more, cleaning doesn't help so no help from TRIM but added burden on RAM, always showing low RAM, navigation between application has got slow, from sleep mode to activation takes a lot of time comparatively, battery drainage faster, smart stay hardly works - screens get off even though reading something, overall lots of issues, not sure if Samsung is listening to it...

Dear all, i would like to clarify all. I was one of the first users to download update 4.3 india for Samsung s3 via ota. The update has been flawless with maybe some little issue with wifi connectivity.pls follow the following instructions for complete experience. I hope u all downloaded the last update received in dec 13. It was a small update maybe preparing for 4.3 update. Download the update via ota with a stable Internet as slow Internet can result in improper update. After update do a hard reset of the phone through settings. Don't forget to backup data of the phone.. my phone is running perfect. Battery life is almost the same. Do remember to block apps and system softwares from using data by sending feedback etc. It consumes unnecessary battery. I switched off my data and left it over night to see battery consumption. Guess what only 2 % usage in 10 hours. With data on its about 11% in 10 hours overnight.great features added. All you people need to do is to increase your battery life.. disable unnecessary settings of andriod system and apps.. try it..u wont regret it.cheers

Hi @Sunny, there's not much to it, you just need to NOT be using your device and have more than 70% battery. So basically, if you've left your phone on charge overnight it'll start up by itself. It needs decent battery life (in case your phone isn't on the charger) to ensure it won't die halfway through and your screen being off means you're not using it (and changing those data points).

Hi @Vishu, are you rooted? If so you can freeze the Software Update process with Titanium Backup's app. Alternatively you can try clearing the cache that contains the downloaded update.

Hi @Mayank and @Dhaval, I'll assume your device has not been modified (as this will deny you OTA updates)? Also, have you tried to push the update via Kies? That should solve any OTA non-availability problem. If you're stuck waiting for the OTA, it could just be that your current baseband version hasn't been released yet, but by now that shouldn't be a problem. OTA updates are released in batches, hence why some people get it sooner than others. The time difference between the first people to get it and the last can be several weeks. You can try the old trick of going into your App manager, to the All tab and down to Google Services Framework, then clearing the cache. This works for some people to push the OTA, but a Google developer commented recently that it actually doesn't work. But it does (seem to) for some who try it.

Hi @Kris. No, my device hasn't been modified. Everytime I go and check for updates it says "All the latest updates have already been installed". Infact I have been checking every single day for the last 25 days. I have not tried through kies yet. I am actually puzzled thar what's trigerring the non OTA update. I haven't tried the Google service framework route either as I read some comments that it breaks your Google play store and triggers some other associated problems. Could there be any other obvious reason for non OTA 4.3 update that I am unable to catch?

Hi @Mayank, here's the post by Dan Morrill, the Google dev I mentioned: http://goo.gl/t0CeaC

I don't bother trying the trick anymore (it never worked for me anyway).

I suspect your delay may be carrier related. Do you know if your carrier is usually quick or slow with releasing firmware updates?

Ok then, your best bet is manually pushing the update through Samsung Kies. Incidentally, once you've done it once you'll probably always do it that way because it is so fast!

Hi @Kris. Got my s3 upgraded to 4.3 from an authorized samsung service center 3 days back and I must admit that I have had absolutely no issues with 4.3 so far. The phone has become butter smooth and battery backup is infact better in my case. (Not sure if there was a patch released in the interim and when I got my phone upgraded, that was taken care of too). All in all I am pretty happy and I feel as I have bought a new phone :). Hope it stays that way. Had a question - I moved couple of apps to SD card but I could not see them there. Could you please tell me the path to see the apps in SD card after they are moved?

Hi @Mayank, to see the apps on the SD card just use a file manager like ES or Astro to find the path to the apps you're after. It'll be something along the lines of /sdcard/data/apps
