is it possible to manualy upgrade from android 2.2.2 to higher os?

I have an LG optimus s and I know there are higher android versions out there, yet when I click system updates nothing happens. so is it possible to manually update my android version?

2.2.2 is the most recent os officially released by LG for the phone.

I have a Huawei Ascend M860 any chance of doingthe same to my android phone? New at all this...thank you for the great site!!

There's a few forums where you can download unofficial roms, the one above, xda, and modaco are a couple, try a google search.
