Feb 3, 2012

Colourful, minimalist, cheery, romantic—as far as Android displays go the options are pretty endless. And the displays tend to be of rather good quality, almost on par with computer displays. However, the latter still trumps smartphones in the sense that computers are more adaptable as far as programmes and manual settings go.

RootDim [root] may not be enable your smartphone to quite measure up to a computer's functionality but it will allow users to adapt the display brightness. Find out more in today's review.

Please note that this application will only run on rooted devices.

Direct Download RootDim [root] from the Android Market (works only with the Android Browser).

carpooling.co.uk – Travelling Made Easy

Feb 2, 2012

You've probably heard of ride shares or carpooling, maybe you've even given it a go once or twice. The concept behind carpooling is simple but ingenious: it is a means for people to share car journeys, that is to say to either hitch a ride with someone travelling to the same place as you in their car, or else to take passengers along when you are driving somewhere. Ride shares are often cheaper than travelling by plane / train / bus, and it certainly won't the environment any harm, either.

This may all sound well and good, but how to go about organising ride shares, i.e. finding drivers and/or passengers? This is where carpooling.co.uk comes in. The website allows ride share aficionados to find each other, nation wide and even across several European states. Find out how the service's application can make travelling easier for you in today's review.

Who likes ad banners flashing across the screen when they’re in the middle an intense round of an RTS game? I don’t mind the little discreet ad banners, but there’s an ad pain threshold I feel should not be crossed. If you’re with me read on because today we’re reviewing AdFree Android, an app that promises that with its help ads can become a thing of the past, or almost.

NB: This application is suitable for rooted devices only!

Jan 31, 2012

I sometimes can't help but feel a little apprehensive vis-à-vis our lives becoming a wee bit too easy and comfortable thanks to miraculous recent advances in technology. Creepy human highway scene in Wall-E, anyone? We love our smartphones – and, admittedly, some of us are absolutely addicted to them – but we’d like to remain at least semi-smart and preferably physically autonomous ourselves, thank you very much.

So without wanting to sound like I’ve become totally lazy and dependent on my gizmos and gadgets—I have to confess that sometimes when I’m working on my computer I kind of don’t feel like getting up to check my phone for incoming text messages.

I was at my desk the other day thinking just that, so I decided to do a quick Market search for an application that would allow me to access my phone via my computer. What I came up with is Remote Web Desktop Full.

PeakFinder Alps

PeakFinder Alps – Get peak-savvy!

Jan 30, 2012

There are few things I’m truly passionate about. My first passion was magic tricks. I actually got so into it that I pursued it semi-professionally for several years. It goes without saying that I’m very into technology and new media. But there's always been a special place in my heart for skiing. I’ve been cruising the slopes since I was two years old… I guess what I love most about the sport is the sense of absolute freedom it procures.

If any of you are also mountain aficionados (skiing, hiking, climbing or whatever crazy stuff you get up to up there), you may be familiar with the following scenario: you’re taking in the beautiful scenery, but you have no idea what any of the peaks are called. I went hiking in the Alps recently and I couldn’t tell which peak belonged to the Italian Alps or even which one was Mont Blanc.

I don’t tend to travel with panorama maps (I prefer to travel as lightly as possible, especially when trudging up mountains), and hence my thirst for informed mountain savviness is rarely quenched. Could PeakFinder Alps change all that? The app’s ambition is to provide users with a comprehensive panorama map of most European mountain ranges.

If you’re an avid skier, hiker or simply a mountain enthusiast you might want to keep reading…

Many of you know and love Swype. The name speaks for itself: Swype literally allows you to enter words by swiping your fingers across the screen. Sounds great, but the problem is that it isn't so easy to get one's hands on Swype. The good news is that there are plenty of good – and sometimes great – alternatives out there—and SlideIT Keyboard is one of them. Let's take a closer look.
